Dozer blades and rippers: package, material and working duty
Dozer blades and rippers need to match the exact tractor package, material and intended work. A D6 badge alone does not identify blade capacity: Cat lists 5.7 cubic metres for its standard push-arm semi-universal configuration, 5.8 for the thirty-inch LGP push-arm configuration and 4.1 for the standard VPAT package. Those are different arrangements, not interchangeable performance promises. Choose blade shape for penetration and material retention, then assess the movements and controls needed for the required finish. A ripper adds a separate choice of linkage, shanks, tips and permitted duty. Removing shanks from a multishank frame does not automatically turn it into a dedicated single-shank rock ripper. Compare the complete installed equipment, including wear parts and transport envelope, before accepting a quote or a production estimate. Compare configuration, geometric capacity and work per hour when choosing between offers.
Compare the complete tractor and blade package
| Configuration | Blade | Capacity |
|---|---|---|
| D6 push arm, 24-in shoes | SU | 5.7 m³ |
| D6 LGP push arm, 30-in shoes | SU | 5.8 m³ |
| D6 LGP push arm, 36-in shoes | Straight | 3.8 m³ |
| D6 standard VPAT, 24-in shoes | VPAT | 4.1 m³ |
Which D6 arrangement has the 5.8-cubic-metre blade?
Cat’s current D6 configuration table assigns 5.8 m³ to the 30-inch LGP push-arm package with a semi-universal blade. The standard push-arm entry is 5.7 m³.
It specifies 24-inch shoes. Keep the package name with its capacity.
The 5.8 m³ entry cannot describe every push-arm D6 or an older variant.
How much smaller is the standard VPAT blade in that table?
The standard VPAT entry lists 4.1 m³, so the standard push-arm SU’s 5.7 m³ is 1.6 m³ greater, about 39% relative to 4.1 m³. The comparison measures geometric capacity. It does not predict a 39% production increase, approve an attachment swap or include the effects of traction, travel and the material being pushed.
Does the widest-shoe D6 necessarily carry the biggest blade?
No: the 36-inch LGP push-arm entry uses a straight blade rated 3.8 m³, while the 30-inch LGP push-arm entry lists 5.8 m³ SU. Wider shoes do not guarantee a larger blade.
Choose one complete undercarriage and attachment arrangement. Assess its ground conditions and task; do not combine maxima from unrelated rows.
Choose dozer blades and rippers for their actual duty
What is the practical difference between straight, semi-U and U blades?
Cat’s blade comparison distinguishes a straight blade’s cutting and shaping role from the stronger material retention of a universal blade, with semi-U between those emphases. Wings and curvature affect material retention. Compare the intended application and actual geometry; the largest nominal volume can be a poor choice when penetration, close work or a specified finish governs the job.
Is VPAT a separate description from blade capacity?
Yes: variable pitch, angle and tilt describe controlled changes in blade position. Cat’s blade guide associates forward pitch with penetration or shedding sticky material and rearward pitch with finishing.
Movement capability does not establish capacity. Its usefulness depends on the approved assembly, controls and task.
Evaluate the work rate and installed quotation
Can a larger blade volume be converted directly into hourly production?
No: take a simplified example of 4 m³ retained per completed cycle, twenty cycles per working hour and 75% productive time across the scheduled hour. The estimate is 60 m³ per scheduled hour.
Calculate it as 4 × 20 × 0.75. Those assumed inputs do not describe a D6 rating; a different push distance, return time, fill or traction changes the result even if nominal blade volume stays fixed.
What does a complete blade quotation need to identify?
Obtain the exact compatible blade, mounts, frame, cylinders, controls, guards, cutting edges and included hardware, along with installation requirements. Identify retained parts and seller-supplied parts separately. A width, capacity and photograph are insufficient to compare an installed package with a bare used blade that still requires major mounting and control components.
Read the ripper frame and ground conditions together
Does a multishank ripper become a dedicated single-shank ripper when two shanks are removed?
Not automatically: the March 2019 D10T manual, printed page 104, explicitly excludes high-production rock ripping with a single center shank from that multishank ripper’s intended duty. The manual also excludes one outside-shank loading case.
Its frame is not designed for full-horsepower ripping in that arrangement. The instruction belongs to that D10T frame.
It cannot set a D6 operating limit.
Which parts of a ripper system need to match?
Cat’s ripper-system guidance distinguishes shanks, tips and shank protection, with single- or multishank arrangements depending on the dozer and use. Match linkage, tip and retention system. Shared dimensions or the word “ripper” on a listing cannot establish the material duty, pin fit, retention or permitted loading of a replacement component.
Can maximum ripper depth prove that the local rock can be ripped?
No: depth describes geometry or reach under its stated conditions, not the strength, jointing or weathering of the ground. Assess the actual material and proposed machine together.
Include the permitted shank and linkage arrangement. A shallow but difficult layer and a deeper fractured layer can present different tasks; depth alone cannot price the work or prove production.
Allow for wear and the traveling configuration
When should a cutting edge be turned or replaced?
For its Precision cutting-edge system, Cat’s maintenance guidance calls for checking the built-in wear indicators daily and keeping hardware at the correct torque. Use that edge’s actual wear criteria and procedure.
Neither a calendar interval nor a guessed thickness can replace them. Isolate and support the blade before handling edges.
What changes when a blade or ripper is included in transport?
Measure the actual traveling width, height, length and mass, including the fitted attachments and any separately carried components. The D6 page lists a folding VPAT option with transport width under three metres, subject to regional availability; that does not make every VPAT fold or establish permit-free movement.
