Cat 14M and 16M graders: blade options, controls and wear adjustments

Choosing between the original M-Series graders

The 14M and 16M comparison involves blade reach, working mass and control equipment as well as engine output. Caterpillar's AEHQ5733-02 describes the C11-powered 14M; AEHQ5734-03 covers the C13-powered 16M. Neither document describes an M3.

Keep those brochure identities with the figures when comparing an advertised machine with the historical reference columns below.

14M: blade options and hydraulic response

The 14M brochure specifies a standard 14 ft moldboard and a factory 16 ft alternative. A wider blade therefore does not identify a 16M by itself. The optional rear ripper starts with three shanks, with provision for four additional shanks.

Front lift equipment can carry a dozer blade or scarifier; a push plate and counterweight are separate choices.

On the 14M, floating both blade-lift cylinders lets the moldboard follow the surface under its own weight. Floating one cylinder leaves slope adjustment to the other. Its pressure-compensated hydraulic valves share available flow: when total demand exceeds pump capacity, cylinder speeds fall proportionately.

That explains why a combined-function demonstration differs from moving one implement alone.

Cat Messenger displays system errors as text and fault codes. Cat ET gives a technician access to stored diagnostics and configuration parameters. The brochure distinguishes the machine's grade-control-ready hydraulic and electrical equipment from the additional brackets, controls and harnesses supplied with the AccuGrade attachment-ready option.

16M: articulation controls and circle adjustment

The 16M's left joystick combines steering, frame articulation, wheel lean and transmission selection. A separate thumb button returns the articulated frame to center. Steering becomes less sensitive as travel speed rises.

The right joystick operates the opposite lift cylinder, moldboard slide, circle rotation and blade tip. An auxiliary pod accompanies configurations with three or more auxiliary functions and can be programmed through Cat ET.

Circle wear does not automatically require replacing the entire assembly. The 16M brochure describes replaceable nylon-composite inserts between the circle, drawbar and support shoes, with brass wear strips at the moldboard mounting. Access plates above the drawbar permit shimming and wear-strip replacement.

Horizontal and vertical adjusting screws retain the moldboard without a conventional shim arrangement.

Programmable Autoshift is optional in this 16M edition, despite the electronically controlled powershift transmission being part of the design. Check the fitted controls. The mechanical articulation-locking pin also remains a separate servicing and transport provision; the joystick's return-to-center button is an operating control.

14M and 16M: forum titles and asking-price sample

The recorded Cat forum sample names the 14M and 16M motor graders. Its thread titles concern implement functions, swing-circle trouble and diagnostic codes. The asking-price rows distinguish the 14M listings from 16M listings; neither the asking figures nor the title counts establish a machine fault rate.

Public equipment forums, including Heavy Equipment Forums, have 7 motor grader threads whose titles name Cat and the 14M, 16M. That is too few titles to say what owners mostly ask about, so the most recent are listed instead

On 2026-09-24, MachineryTrader listed 55 Cat motor grader listings under these names on this page; the figures are from the first page of results

The original sample contained 37 listed 14M machines and 18 listed 16M machines. The two sets have different year ranges and displayed-hour medians. Treat those observations as September2026 asking-price context, alongside the original CPSC search date, rather than a current inventory or recall clearance.
