Power changes with the gear and AWD setting

The 160 technical specification separates ordinary horsepower from metric horsepower: its first-gear base rating is221hp, while224hp is the metric entry. Both accompany165kW. That explains the earlier224hp web figure without treating it as an additional engine setting.

The document also separates VHP Plus, AWD-off and AWD-on columns. An AWD maximum cannot substitute for the base rating of a tandem-drive machine.

In the 160's forward first gear, the published columns give221hp for VHP Plus,231hp with AWD off and241hp with AWD on. Higher forward gears have different entries. Reverse has its own schedule.

Select the relevant row before comparing engine output with the 150; the headline number does not describe every gear or direction. The brochure tests net power at the flywheel with specified engine equipment and the fan at minimum speed.

Grading options require different hardware

On the 150 product listing, Cross Slope Assist controls one end of the moldboard while the operator controls the other. Its position-sensing shift cylinder, blade-avoidance function and sensors are distinct from Attachment Ready Option swivel mountings. Sensor-ready mountings alone do not establish that a grader has working3D control.

Inspect the installed package and the display's available functions together.

The 160 brochure describes replaceable nylon circle inserts and brass moldboard wear strips. Horizontal and vertical adjustment screws position its shimless retention system; circle wear and moldboard retention are separate inspection points. Its automatic differential lock releases during a turn and locks again when travelling straight.

Programmable Auto Shift remains an option, even though the underlying APECS powershift transmission is listed as standard.

Keep the March 2026 redesign separate

The launch announcement makes joystick steering optional on the new150 and standard on the new160. Standard moldboards remain12ft and14ft respectively, with14ft and16ft upgrades. Optional front, rear and360-degree cameras feed a10-inch display.

These are announced configurations, not proof that an earlier JOY machine has those cameras or the new finish gear. Caterpillar announced the European150 joystick launch for the second half of2026, with other configurations and regions following.

Public equipment forums, including Heavy Equipment Forums, have 23 motor grader threads whose titles name Cat and the 150, 160 line that the 150 / 150 AWD JOY, 160 / 160 AWD JOY belongs to (no title names the exact model). Sorting the title words into topics, the most common are transmission and drive (3), hydraulics (2). Titles count under every topic they mention, so this shows what owners ask about, not how often the machine fails
