Cat 257, 267 and 277: tracks, controls and service access

The original 257 and 277 use different ground-contact arrangements

Cat's original 257 description specifies a near-vertical loader path, achieved with additional links on each side of the arms. The linkage moves forward as it rises. That is useful information when a buyer needs reach over a truck side: the reach changes through the lift, so a ground-level bucket position cannot represent the loading position.

Underneath, Cat describes the 257 with 24 wheeled contact points, a cord-reinforced rubber track and replaceable roller sleeves at the elevated drive. The manufacturer specifically says no steel is used in that track construction. Inspect the sleeves and molded drive lugs as a matching set.

A replacement described simply as a rubber track does not establish compatibility with this internal-drive system.

The 257's on/off auxiliary circuit is standard; proportional auxiliary control is an option. Another optional control supplies a fourth function for tools such as side-shift planers or angle brooms. Operate the intended attachment before valuing those options.

Loader-arm joysticks, an auxiliary-flow switch and the tool's additional electrical or hydraulic command are different functions.

What to inspect on the 277's MTSS suspension

The 277 manufacturer record describes 48 wheeled contact points, ten torsion axles and six articulating wheel carriages. Its drive engages two rows of rubber lugs, and its wider track has a longer ground-contact length than the 257 record. These are physical differences to check underneath an old machine, not features established by its paint or bucket.

For service access, the 277 cab tilts backward and uses a self-latching support. The radiator, hydraulic cooler and grille also tilt upward so debris between them can be reached. Look beyond a clean rear grille when assessing cooling condition.

Cat distinguishes the full hydraulic system from the smaller tank refill in this record; ordering oil solely from the tank number would leave the system quantity unresolved.

The early 277 carries a turbocharged 3034T description, while the 257 record identifies a naturally aspirated 3034. Keep those engine identities separate from later B- and C-series machines. The combined comparison retains the 267's own specification record; neither of these neighboring descriptions proves a 267 option was installed.
