Cat 966D and R1300G: surface loader versus underground LHD

R1300G is an underground LHD, not a 966D variant

Cat's R1300G brochure identifies a load-haul-dump machine for underground hard-rock work. Its low operator station and tramming arrangement serve a different task from the 966D surface wheel loader. Similar engine displacement does not make these two machines interchangeable, and a surface-loader bucket comparison does not describe underground clearance.

STIC combines steering and transmission requests in one controller. Side movement commands articulation, a rocker selects travel direction, and thumb buttons select the gear. The implement joystick remains separate.

The left brake pedal can neutralize the transmission while allowing engine speed for hydraulic work; that is a control function, not automatically a slipping-clutch fault.

The R1300G brochure also distinguishes a dump bucket from an ejector attachment, whose controls use an additional circuit. An enclosed pressurized cab and the open station are different arrangements. Identify the actual station and bucket before comparing a listing photograph with the specification drawing.

R1300G weights and clearances have separate meanings

The June 2022 technical sheet separates calculated operating mass, operating mass with rated payload, and gross machine mass. A loaded-machine figure must not be labeled as the empty transport weight. Its axle-distribution rows change with the payload as well, which matters when discussing which wheels carry traction.

The dimension table has separate columns for each dump bucket and for the ejector bucket. It also distinguishes tire width, machine width without a bucket, and total width with the attachment. Recommended tunnel clearance is another measurement.

The top of the ROPS does not define the overhead space required throughout the loading cycle.

Likewise, hydraulic tank capacity is a reservoir refill entry. It is not the complete hydraulic-system volume. The technical sheet gives outside and inside clearance radii separately, so the two turning measurements cannot be swapped when assessing a tunnel corner.

A 966D engine may have been repowered

Cat's July 2014 repower list includes the 966D with serial prefix99Y and a C7 Tier3 replacement arrangement. That entry describes a conversion option for an older machine, not its original factory engine. On a used 966D, compare the installed engine plate and repower paperwork with the chassis identity before ordering engine-specific parts.
