The original 980G has rated and maximum flywheel outputs

Caterpillar's original 980G brochure identifies the 3406C DITA engine and distinguishes rated flywheel output from a higher maximum reached at a different engine speed. The earlier reference gave both outputs the same value. Use the corrected engine and maximum-output rows below rather than treating every horsepower entry as the same measurement.

Its Integrated Braking System combines downshift and transmission-neutralizer logic in the left brake pedal. Variable Shift Control separately selects a shifting pattern. Those functions explain why a change in left-pedal behaviour is not enough on its own to diagnose a slipping transmission.

The brochure also separates the two-section implement pump from the smaller pilot pump. Electrical signals from the armrest controls operate a loader-frame pilot valve; the controls are not direct mechanical links to the main implement circuit. Pump output, pilot supply and the cab's control signal therefore belong to different parts of a hydraulic investigation.

Do not silently substitute the Series II description

The later Series II brochure introduces a free-wheel stator torque converter and describes the stator's action through a one-way clutch. It also identifies a different seat and cooling arrangement. Those are edition distinctions to establish on the actual loader before pricing a rebuild or adopting a component description from a Series II advert.

That Series II publication calls Ride Control optional and lists an external axle-oil cooler for demanding applications. Its payload system can be fitted at the factory or through a dealer. A seller's machine may therefore have a different combination of ride, cooling and weighing equipment from another loader carrying the same broad G-Series name.

It also distinguishes the standard counterweight's rear bumper and lower slab. Comparing an equipped machine with a brochure weight requires those parts to match the stated package; a bare frame or altered rear arrangement is not the same weighing condition.

Check the original control layout on the machine

Caterpillar's original 980G product archive identifies a neutralizer-lockout switch that lets the left pedal work as a brake alone. It also describes in-cab adjustment of the lift and lower kickouts. Check those separate functions during an operator-led demonstration rather than assuming that an automatic kickout proves the transmission neutralizer is active.
