Cat D3B to D4C Series II: prefixes, transmissions and track equipment
D3B serial prefixes separate the drive arrangements
Caterpillar's January 2011 Performance Handbook lists power-shift D3B tractors separately from direct-drive versions. Prefixes 23Y and 27Y identify standard-width power-shift entries; 24Y and 28Y appear on LGP entries. The 3YC and 5MC rows instead identify direct drive.
A D3B advertisement without the prefix leaves a substantial part of the transmission description unresolved.
The power-shift rows are not identical either. Caterpillar prints different travel-speed progressions for the two standard-width entries. That makes a single unqualified maximum-speed figure a poor way to establish the fitted gearbox.
Read the machine identity and controls before choosing the relevant specification row.
The historical tables also separate D3C Series II power shift from Series III hydrostatic drive. The model-number resemblance does not establish that their steering, transmission troubleshooting or service procedures are interchangeable. D4C needs its generation as well: the handbook includes early direct-drive tractors and much later power-shift and hydrostatic models under that name.
A suffix and prefix narrow the question far more effectively than the D4C badge alone.

The November 1990 D3C Series II brochure describes spring-applied, hydraulically released dry steering clutches and band brakes. Oil-cooled steering equipment is optional in that publication. Hydraulic lines at a clutch housing therefore do not, by themselves, establish an oil-cooled clutch arrangement.
The brochure also offers pedal steering or hand-lever steering, so the operator controls deserve the same identification check.
LGP is more than a set of wide shoes. Caterpillar pairs the wider gauge with a longer track contact and additional shoes. The standard and LGP columns consequently describe different undercarriage arrangements.
Installing a wide shoe does not make a standard tractor equivalent to every measurement in the LGP column.
Power angle does not mean hydraulic pitch
The D3C Series II PAT blade has hydraulic lift, angle and tilt, while pitch is adjusted mechanically. That distinction matters when checking a claimed blade-control fault: moving a hydraulic control is not how this arrangement changes its pitch setting. The blade specification also separates standard PAT, LGP PAT and LGP straight-blade equipment.
Keep the fitted blade with its corresponding width, depth and lift measurements.
