History and service record of NO.14E

  • Where the grader line came from. Caterpillar Tractor Co. acquired the Russell Grader Manufacturing Company on 4 December 1928 and set up a Road Machinery Division for blade graders and motor grader development. In April 1931 that division introduced the Auto Patrol, which Caterpillar describes as the industry's first true motor grader, built as one machine rather than a tractor with a grader frame fitted around it. The origin of motor graders produced by Caterpillar, Caterpillar.
  • An owner's account. A rental-fleet owner who bought a 1969 Caterpillar 14E to rent out in the construction season and plow snow in winter wrote up the history of the motor grader after researching the model. History of the Motor Grader, Weberdex, 3 May 2022.
  • Serial prefixes. In a 2008 owners' forum thread on identifying a newly bought 14E, a member listed the 14E serial prefixes as 72G, 99G and 12K and said the earlier 14C carried a 35F prefix, advising the buyer to read the plate before guessing a year. The buyer had been told the machine was from the mid-1960s. Thread on a newly bought Cat 14E grader, ACMOC forum, June 2008.
