184, 204 and 304 G-Tier: engine, attachment controls and clearance

Deere's compact G-Tier loaders offer related controls with different engines, hydraulic flow and travel performance. The MW184GAU, MW204GAU and MW304GAU brochures separate those choices. Cab type, tyres, coupler and fitted bucket also change the machine being compared.

A single operating-weight number cannot identify all of those arrangements.

184: a naturally aspirated engine and hydrostatic inching

The 184 uses the Yanmar 4TNV88C, a naturally aspirated 2.2 litre engine. Deere separates 44 net horsepower from 48 gross horsepower at 2200 rpm. Neither entry supports the older zero-horsepower heading.

Its hydrostatic inching pedal lets the operator reduce travel while retaining engine speed and hydraulic flow, which matters when an attachment needs engine rpm without the corresponding ground speed.

The 184 brochure lists an open ROPS canopy and an optional low-profile heated, air-conditioned cab. Its “under eight feet” description specifically concerns the open-canopy arrangement. Check the selected tyre and roof configuration before using that statement to judge a doorway.

The wheel and tyre schedule records changes in vertical height as well as width.

204: attachment assist is an equipment choice

The 204 has a turbocharged 2.1 litre Yanmar and 62 net horsepower in MW204GAU. The optional attachment-assist package adds a third-function mini-joystick together with creep control and throttle lock. Deere restricts that package to cab-equipped machines in this edition.

An open-canopy 204 with ordinary auxiliary hydraulics therefore does not establish the presence of that control package.

Quik-Tatch and hook/Euro-style couplers are separate choices. The original weight matrix distinguishes them, then separates bucket size, forks and open versus enclosed operator stations. Use the row matching the advertised coupler.

Optional speed-activated ride control has operator-adjustable switching thresholds; it is another fitted feature to check during a demonstration.

304: faster travel with its own tyre basis

The 304 brochure publishes 18.6 mph in its higher hydrostatic range, compared with 12.4 mph for the 184 and 204. The 304 speed table assumes 405/70R20 tyres, while the smaller loaders' tables use 365/70R18. Keep that difference visible when comparing speeds or machine height.

The 304 also receives a higher-output turbocharged engine version; a shared displacement does not make its rating identical to the 204.

All three hydraulic schedules identify an open-center system with a fixed-displacement gear pump. Their flow entries have a stated test pressure. That pressure is a measurement condition, distinct from the coupling-pressure and relief-pressure rows.

Compare like entries before choosing an attachment; the highest pressure printed anywhere in the table is not its continuous operating requirement.
