Dimensions and weight
The historical 770G reference mixes a grader with a truck
The archived reference matrix includes a 770G entry with truck-body dimensions, payload and hoist times, alongside grader dimensions. These are not all specifications for a Deere motor grader. The tables captioned “770G: mixed reference record” retain that source record for checking, not as verified grader data.
Use the identified manufacturer configuration before relying on a quantity from that column.
Deere's 770G/GP brochure identifies a PowerTech 9.0 L engine and a blade-equipped motor grader. Caterpillar's 770G document instead describes an off-highway truck with a C15 engine and dump-body equipment. The shared number does not make their engines, payloads, tires, body dimensions or protection standards interchangeable.
In particular, a Caterpillar overload-policy or cab-protection note in the archived column cannot establish a Deere grader requirement. The separate configuration records and manufacturer links must be read with their own machine identity and publication scope.
Source: Deere 770G/GP four-wheel-drive brochure; Source: Cat 770G off-highway truck AEHQ7213-02The 772GP reference displacement of 415 cu in is also unresolved: Deere's G/GP brochure specifies 9.0 L (548 cu in). Keep the reference number as a discrepancy, not a verified engine capacity for the configuration in that brochure.

770G and 772GP: owner reports
Sources: 3 forum discussions about the John Deere 770 motor graders and older 770 tractors; tractorbynet.com and heavyequipmentforums.com.- The 770 tractor accounts are separate from the grader heat report. In one 770 farm-tractor discussion, a replacement fuel shut-off solenoid reopened during cranking. Another older 770 still would not start after replacement fuel filters, lines and battery; a respondent asked about PTO and transmission interlocks. The 770G grader account instead described hydraulic overheating before fifteen minutes of operation, with a reply requesting an infrared temperature measurement and mentioning a standby-pressure specification. Keep the two farm-tractor starting accounts separate from that grader’s hydraulic system; a shared number is not a shared machine. Threads read: 1, 2, 3.
- The blade and software accounts name different grader generations. A new 772GP reportedly lost its machine configuration after a dealer software update at 1,200 hours. The slow left-hand blade-lowering complaint concerns a 772BH; a reply suggested checking control-spool travel. The remaining account concerns a 772D whose cutting edge had been ground down and whose moldboard frog was damaged. Those are retained reports of configuration loss, a valve-function symptom and physical blade damage, respectively. They do not establish that a software change repairs the older valve symptom or that every 772GP has a worn frog. Threads read: 1, 2, 3.

A 772GP control package needs more than a GP decal
Deere’s 772G/GP six-wheel-drive brochure distinguishes conventional G-model levers from the GP’s electrohydraulic control choices. It describes dual joysticks, fingertip armrest controls and a field kit for changing between those arrangements. A used 772GP therefore needs its actual controls identified, rather than assuming that every GP cab feels the same to operate.
The brochure also separates cross-slope assistance from fully integrated SmartGrade. Cross slope can control one side of the blade while the operator controls the other; it can also serve as a manually used slope indication. That is a different equipment claim from a grader arriving with a complete three-dimensional grading system.
Establish the installed package and its supported functions before pricing guidance equipment into a used grader.
The European G-series six-wheel-drive equipment list likewise separates Grade Pro equipment from optional items. Its tyre and moldboard assumptions differ across the listed grader sizes. Keep those assumptions with a traction or transport comparison.
Neither a later brochure’s automation feature nor a larger sibling’s moldboard specification establishes what an earlier 770G or 772GP carries. For these models, control configuration, drive arrangement and the actual front equipment are separate checks.
Four driven wheels, six driven wheels and precision mode
The 770G/GP four-wheel-drive brochure describes a PowerShift Plus transmission with its own reservoir, filtration and cooling. Its foot brakes act on the tandem wheels, while the parking brake is spring applied and hydraulically released. A transmission-temperature complaint, brake concern and implement-hydraulic complaint consequently require identification of the affected system; the model’s single overall oil-capacity figure cannot describe their separate service compartments.
That brochure offers a standard circle with replaceable wear inserts and adjustable pinion backlash, or a premium circle with a sealed roller-element bearing and a sealed pinion connection. They have different inspection and maintenance features despite serving the same blade function. Identify the fitted circle before applying an adjustment procedure from another G-series grader.
Its width and ground-clearance table also changes with the tyre package, and its operating-weight assumptions specify the moldboard, cutting edges, tyres, fuel and operator. Added scarifier and ripper equipment belongs in the transport calculation rather than assuming the bare base weight covers it.
The 772G/GP six-wheel-drive specification adds separate hydrostatic circuits for the front wheels. Its precision mode uses front-wheel propulsion, with a dial controlling working speed, instead of describing ordinary tandem-wheel travel in a low gear. The brochure separately gives the effective gears for six-wheel drive and for precision operation.
When comparing a 770G with a 772GP for finishing work, verify that the latter’s front-drive equipment and mode selection operate as specified. The GP control suffix alone does not describe that drive arrangement.
What the 770G overheating discussion established about that machine
The 770G hydraulic-overheating thread began with an owner reporting overheating within fifteen minutes and asking about standby pressure. A mechanic asked whether an infrared instrument had confirmed the temperature. Later posts discussed fan control and then pressure remaining in the load-sense circuit.
The owner eventually reported a resolution after pressure-gauge measurements and valve adjustments. That is one reported outcome; it is not a verified specification for every 770G or permission to copy the poster’s valve settings.
The sequence matters because the initial account, the later suspected fan-control problem and the final pressure report are not three independently confirmed grader failures. The poster also supplied different machine identifiers in later messages. Treat the thread as a diagnostic history with uncertain continuity, and identify the actual grader and its applicable test procedure before drawing a conclusion.
Neither the old 770 farm-tractor starting accounts nor the 772BH blade-valve report establishes the cause on this 770G.
