D21-8 Hydroshift operation and blade arrangements

The North American D21A-8/D21P-8 brochure describes Hydroshift as a hydraulically controlled planetary transmission with a damper, rather than an ordinary torque-converter powershift. The left joystick selects direction, steering and either travel speed. The right joystick operates blade lift, tilt and angle.

An inching pedal allows controlled starts and close approaches; it is a distinct control from the blade's float position.

Steering uses dry multiple-disc clutches linked to dry contracting-band brakes through PPC controls. That construction matters when reading an account about steering trouble: a D21 name alone does not establish an electronic travel motor or hydrostatic pump diagnosis. The earlier D21P-6 remains a separate generation, and the D20 models in the Japanese family brochure have another transmission arrangement.

The US blade schedule lists a 590 mm moldboard height on both A and P variants. The P's wider blade has a separate SAE capacity, and the brochure prints an additional capacity calculated from blade length and height squared. Keep the two capacity definitions apart.

The blade's hydraulic angling and tilting hoses have steel protection; the drawing and equipment table help identify missing covers.

What the Japanese 8E0 publication changes

Komatsu's Japanese publication identifies the EDM-4D94LE-2 engine and prints separate net and gross output under its stated standards. Those entries use metric horsepower in brackets. They must not silently replace the North American sheet's SAE horsepower.

Its specification columns also distinguish steel shoes from rubber crawler equipment, including differences in machine mass and travel speed.

The Japanese brochure describes DT/T electrical connectors, O-ring face-seal hydraulic joints and automatic fuel-system air bleeding. It lists a water separator and radiator reserve tank among the service provisions. Inspect those components on an imported machine before assuming the earlier US arrangement is identical.

KOMTRAX and an integrated steel-roof ROPS/FOPS canopy are described for this Japanese range. That establishes the published regional equipment, not current telematics coverage or an active subscription on a used export.
