  • How Manitou began. Manitou Group's history page says that in 1958 Marcel Braud had the idea of reversing the design of a farm tractor and adding a lift mast and hydraulic steering, producing the first rough-terrain forklift, the MC 5, which had a load capacity of 500 kg and was intended for the construction market.   • Maniscopic telehandlers. Manitou Group's history page dates the company's entry into the telehandler market to 1981, with the Maniscopic range, which it says became the flagship products of the company, and says Manitou UK opened at Chandlers Ford near Southampton in 1972 as the first of 26 subsidiaries around the world.   • Gehl and the U.S. market. Manitou Group's history page records that in 2008 the group bought Gehl Company, owner of the Gehl and Mustang brands, which it says let Manitou Group enter the US market and became Manitou Americas. History, Manitou Group.
