Boomer 55 versus4055/4060: controls, PTO and fit

Boomer 55 and 4055 are different tractor generations

The Boomer 55 is not simply a shortened way of writing Boomer 4055. New Holland's current compact brochure describes the smaller engine family with hydrostatic or synchronized-shuttle transmission. The older 4000-series sheet describes turbocharged four-cylinder utility tractors with mechanical or electrohydraulic shuttle choices.

Their similar gross power does not establish common filters, transmission parts or loader mounts.

For a mower or other PTO implement, compare the output belonging to the installed transmission. On the older pair, SSS and EHSS have separate claimed PTO ratings despite sharing the model's gross engine rating. The current Boomer 55 likewise has different gear and hydrostatic PTO outputs.

Tested PTO results retained below are another category again; a measured test result and a manufacturer's claim are not interchangeable labels.

Shuttle operation, cruise and engine-speed memory

The 4000-series options both provide forward and reverse gears, but EHSS supplies the electrohydraulic shuttle. The later Boomer 55 offers a stepped synchronized shuttle or a three-range, dual-pedal hydrostat. New Holland describes clutching for direction changes with the synchronized shuttle; hydrostatic direction changes use the pedals.

A shopping list that only says shuttle leaves a meaningful control difference unresolved.

On the current compact series, cruise control accompanies the hydrostatic choice, while Engine Speed Management saves and recalls an engine setting for PTO work. Those are different functions. Cruise concerns travel, and engine-speed memory helps return to the required implement speed.

Neither feature is evidence that the older 4055 has the same controls.

Hitch coordinates and a tire restriction worth checking

Hitch lift at the link ends is higher than lift measured behind them. New Holland's 4000-series sheet gives the latter coordinate explicitly, and the modern compact table prints both. Match the implement's load position before treating either advertised maximum as available capacity.

The steering pump is separate from the implement pump, so combined delivery is not an extra allowance to assign to a rear remote.

The older North American sheet bases its dimensions on industrial tires. Its optional Galaxy Turf Special golf-and-turf package carries an explicit restriction against front-loader installation. Turf tires in general are not all that special package; identify the actual tire choice before rejecting or accepting a loader combination.

The sheet also lists cab and ROPS shipping weights separately. Those are shipping definitions, not ballast recommendations.

Remote-valve options matter too. The 4000-series sheet offers simple or detented rear valves and a joystick-operated mid-mount arrangement. A loader joystick does not establish that the rear connection is detented.

Check the required circuit and control independently.
