Cat 232B Series 2 to 252B Series 2 specifications

Compare the lift linkage before comparing engine ratings

Cat describes the 232B Series 2 and 242B Series 2 as vertical-lift loaders. Their published reach at maximum lift and dump is the same in the European sheets, while the larger model has a higher bucket pin and greater dump clearance. Those dimensions answer a truck-loading question more directly than engine output.

Check the truck’s side height against dump clearance, then consider reach; the maximum overall height is a different dimension.

The 232B sheet gives a counterweighted operating-capacity entry that disagrees with its separate counterweight-increase note. Confirm the machine’s actual weight package and applicable rating before using either entry for a lift. A counterweight does not establish that another model’s rating applies.

Radial lift and travel options on the 236B

The 236B Series 2 uses a radial lift path. Cat’s June 2008 European sheet specifies a two-speed option separately from its ordinary travel speed. Its proportional auxiliary control packages distinguish the single-speed and two-speed arrangements.

A two-speed control package is therefore something to identify on the offered machine, not a feature established by a Series 2 badge.

That European edition names a Stage IIIA C3.4 T engine. Cat’s earlier Spanish sheet instead lists a Tier 2 3044C DIT. The publication and emissions arrangement explain why apparently similar 236B Series 2 records can name different engines.

Record the engine plate and the market specification before buying filters or comparing a power figure. Both editions describe mechanical and hydraulic quick-coupler choices and different open or enclosed cab packages.

Match the attachment circuit, not just the coupler

The 242B Series 2 sheet separates standard hydraulic flow from its high-flow option. Cat’s contemporary work-tool catalog goes further: some augers, planers, trenchers and mulchers are limited to High Flow XPS arrangements. A high-flow label alone does not erase the XPS restriction.

The same catalog places the smaller BH150 and larger BH160 backhoes against different machine lists. Identify the specific attachment and the installed hydraulic arrangement before treating two compatible-looking couplers as a complete match.

Use the full serial prefix for the service book

Cat’s Series 2 operation-manual cover begins its 232B2 coverage at SCH2475 and its 252B2 coverage at SCP4600. Earlier machines with the same prefixes require their applicable publications. Photograph the complete identification plate, including the number after the letters, before choosing the service book.

Load figures were mislabelled as angles in the reference listing

The reference's “Tipping Angle” entries below are source errors, not slope limits. Caterpillar's 236B Series 2 sheet gives a tipping load of 4,000 lb, and its 252B Series 2 sheet gives 5,501 lb. Those quantities belong to load, not degrees.

The corrected tipping-load row uses the manufacturer figures for those two models. Their rated operating capacities remain separate measures.

The reference also mixes engine entries on the 236B Series 2 listing. Caterpillar's AEHQ5897 sheet identifies the 3044C DIT engine; the reference additionally names a C3.4 DIT and different power figures. Identify the engine and applicable publication before using an alternative engine rating.

A matching series number does not establish that all these entries describe one configuration.

Other values in the rejected-angle table are retained as a record of the source discrepancy, with their original unit label explicitly rejected. They must not be used as machine angles, permitted slopes or verified replacement load values. Use the actual model's load and attachment information for a capacity decision.
