A 307C's boom arrangement matters as much as its reach. Cat's AEHQ5535-01 distinguishes the one-piece boom, an optional parallel-offset arrangement on the 307C and the separate 307C SB swing-boom machine. Parallel offset lets the digging line move beside the tracks.

The SB changes boom direction at a swing joint and uses a foot pedal to control that movement. These are different ways to work beside a wall.

The 307C hydraulic valve stack also has a configuration limit. Cat permits two additional stackable valves on the conventional machine but only one on the SB. The standard auxiliary valve prepares for optional circuits; it does not establish that a hammer line, double-acting thumb circuit or combined arrangement has been installed.

Check the actual plumbing and controls for the intended tool.

Compact radius still needs a working envelope

The 308C CR reduces rear swing, but its front envelope changes with the stick. AEHQ5469 prints separate front-swing and overall working-width entries for the medium and long sticks. The brochure's opening width statement even disagrees with its dimension table.

Use the actual drawing and installed stick when planning clearance; a compact rear cannot establish that the bucket clears the opposite obstruction.

Some linkage dimensions are shared with the 307C, but Cat specifically excepts the boom-cylinder-to-frame pin size. Do not order that pin by the neighboring model's name. The bucket side-play adjustment described in this publication is also conditional on ordering Cat buckets.

A machine fitted with another bucket may have a different adjustment arrangement.

For paved work, the 308C CR brochure separates bolt-on rubber pads from optional segment-type rubber track. Inspect which system is fitted. Its blade has replaceable, reversible cutting edges in three pieces, while the blade-width choice follows the undercarriage arrangement.

Those wear parts and mounting holes offer more useful inspection points than a single overall-width number.

Cooling and fuel checks are accessible from the rear compartments: the water separator sits in the radiator compartment, and the oil gauge, oil filter, fuel filter and priming pump are grouped on the engine's left. The steel partition between engine and pump compartments is another identifiable feature to inspect after repairs.
