Cat 307D and 308D CR/SB: chassis and attachment choices

The 307D uses conventional tail swing with an extended rear counterweight. That rearward leverage supports lifting and digging, but it also needs clearance behind the operator. A compact-radius 308D is a different chassis choice, not simply the same excavator with a larger model number.

The 307D's fixed boom favors stability; standard and long sticks change its working envelope. Its thumb-ready stick does not identify the installed thumb mechanism. A stiff-link thumb needs bucket curl to hold material, a hydraulic thumb has its own cylinder, and a progressive linkage extends the thumb's rotation.

Cat offered different thumb lengths for pin-on buckets and pin-grabber couplers, so changing the coupler can also change the required thumb arrangement.

Segmented rubber pads attach to a track chain and can be serviced individually. They differ from rubber pads bolted onto suitable steel shoes. The standard blade's wear edge is welded; the wider optional blade uses a bolt-on edge.

Inspect those interfaces before pricing replacement wear parts.

308D CR swing boom, auxiliary flow and track options

The 308D CR keeps its upper body close to the undercarriage width and uses a sliding cab door. Opening that door therefore avoids the extra space needed by a hinged door. The SB version adds a swing boom: it can trench parallel to the tracks or work alongside a wall without relocating the undercarriage.

The fixed-boom version instead emphasizes lifting stability.

Auxiliary plumbing has more than one role. The standard high-pressure lines include a diverter for one-way hammer use or two-way tools; the monitor adjusts auxiliary delivery. Quick-coupler lines and a secondary medium-pressure circuit remain separate options.

A rotating attachment needs that additional circuit, not merely a pair of quick connectors at the stick.

The 308D choices also include a continuous rubber belt with embedded steel reinforcement, unlike the individually replaceable segmented pads. Operating weight depends on the installed configuration: Cat's schedule includes counterweight, rubber tracks, bucket, operator, fuel and auxiliary lines. The swing-boom weight must not be copied from the fixed-boom column.
