Choose the 317B undercarriage, then check the control system

The 317B L and LN share the 3046T engine and Maestro control family, but the narrow undercarriage changes the transport decision. Their historical forum links also need careful reading: a thread headed 317B does not necessarily describe a B-model machine. Establish the machine identity before transferring a repair suggestion.

LN means a narrower transport arrangement

Caterpillar describes the L undercarriage as its stability-oriented arrangement and the LN as the narrower transport choice. The dimensional drawing specifies different shipping widths and track gauges for the two. Measure the fitted shoes and overall width against the access route; a photograph of the upper body will not establish which undercarriage is fitted.

Maestro separates engine power from hydraulic priority

The original brochure provides power selection alongside boom-priority, swing-priority and fine-control work modes. A machine moving slowly in a finishing setting is not being demonstrated under the same hydraulic allocation as truck loading. Record both selections during a comparison.

Its automatic engine-speed control and the right-joystick idle button are separate controls. Show each response independently when investigating a seller's claim that auto idle works. The button responding does not, by itself, demonstrate the automatic function.

The stalling thread was later identified as an A-model account

In the linked stalling discussion, the owner described intermittent load stalling, lost auto idle and improvement after warming. A later contributor explicitly identified the posted machine number as an A model despite the thread title. Keep that identification correction with the account.

It prevents the conversation becoming an unsupported claim that this exact fault characterizes the 317B.

The replies proposed engine-speed sensing and pump regulation, but the thread does not report a confirmed completed repair. Those proposals are leads for a qualified diagnosis, not demonstrated fixes or an instruction to replace the pump.

Heavy Equipment Forums stalling account,original post and later model-identification correction

The other power-loss discussion describes slow movement without a stall

The owner in the second thread reported slow boom and stick movement after a long idle period, with no engine stall. A reply also questioned its B-model identification. That symptom differs from the first account's stalling.

Present the operating symptoms and uncertain identity to the technician instead of treating both thread titles as one established B-series failure pattern.
