Cat 330B, 330B LN and 330C LN: chassis and control differences

The LN chassis and the engine generation are separate choices

Cat's European 330C L/LN brochure identifies LN as the long, narrow undercarriage intended to ease transport. Its chassis schedule gives track gauge separately from overall width with shoes fitted. The width of the upper body is another dimension.

A transporter needs the complete machine width, not the distance between track centres.

The C-series brochure specifies the C-9 ATAAC engine with hydraulically actuated, electronically controlled injection. Its coolant radiator and hydraulic-oil radiator sit beside each other, with different fan drives. A cooling complaint therefore needs the affected circuit identified.

The narrow chassis designation does not describe that engine or cooling arrangement.

Reach, mass-excavation and variable-angle fronts also have different sticks and bucket families. An LN advertisement alone cannot establish the fitted front's lifting or digging envelope.

B-series hydraulic results need the matching test conditions

The original SENR1663-01 testing sheet covers 330B L/LN machines powered by the 3306 engine. It explicitly requires the actual engine arrangement and serial number to be verified because the installed arrangement may have changed. A rebuilt engine cannot be identified reliably from an old advertisement.

The sheet separates pilot, implement, swing and travel pressure tests. It also separates powered cycle times from empty-bucket cylinder drift. A statement that “the hydraulics tested well” leaves those measurements unspecified.

Ask for the function tested, the relevant procedure and its recorded result.

Travel checks cover each side and direction independently. Good boom performance does not establish that both travel circuits meet the same test. Leave pressure testing to someone equipped for the specified procedure.

A B-series electrical fault does not prove a worn pump

Cat's RENR1998-06 controller tables identify pump-delivery pressure input, governor feedback, pressure switches and proportional-reducing-valve commands separately. Those signals describe different parts of engine-and-pump control. A slow response can require checking the command and feedback paths before condemning a rotating group.

The tables distinguish a clogged hydraulic-filter indication from the air-filter switch and fluid-level switches. The optional fine-swing switch also changes the listed swing-brake behaviour. Record the installed option and the precise warning instead of treating every monitor message as the same hydraulic failure.
