Cat excavator above 168 hp specifications

Long reach and demolition fronts change the comparison

A high engine rating does not distinguish a long-reach machine from a demolition excavator. Cat's 352 Long Reach combines an extended digging front with a variable-gauge high-wide undercarriage and additional counterweight. Its published operating-weight note identifies the boom, stick, bucket, shoes and counterweight used for that figure.

Keep those components together when checking a listing against the specification. Replacing the front does not leave the published range and equipped weight unchanged.

Cat identifies dredging, ditch cleaning, settling-pond cleanout and waterway maintenance among the 352 Long Reach applications. For that kind of purchase, the front configuration and reach diagram answer a different question from an ordinary digging-depth comparison. The model's headline horsepower alone leaves those differences unresolved.

The 330 Straight Boom is a demolition example. Cat's launch specification identifies reinforced booms, sticks and frame, plus a bucket-cylinder guard. The demolition cab has front and roof operator guards with reinforced laminated windows.

Those are equipment differences to establish on the machine; a straight-looking boom alone does not demonstrate that the complete demolition package is fitted.

Its attachment provision also includes quick-coupler, medium-pressure and high-pressure circuits. A buyer comparing a grapple or other demolition tool should identify the available circuit as well as the front geometry. Cat qualifies the launch sheet's weight by its typical equipment and the dimensions by bucket selection.

Use that qualification when comparing it with a general-purpose 330 or an older excavator in this directory.
