Cat 385C: excavator, front shovel and UHD data
385C digging fronts, front shovel and UHD demolition data
The 385C name appears on a conventional excavator, a front shovel and an ultra-high demolition machine. Their front-end measurements cannot be combined into a single equipped machine. Caterpillar's excavator brochure quotes its base operating weight with a 7.25-metre mass-excavation boom, 2.9-metre stick and specified rock bucket.
Its working-range schedule separates the shorter and longer mass sticks. A reach figure from a different front does not describe that base weight configuration. Original 385C/385C L excavator brochure.
The excavator's variable-gauge undercarriage has two bolted roller-frame positions. The narrower position reduces shipping width; the wider position provides the operating base. Its SmartBoom function allows the boom to move without consuming pump flow during specified scraping, hammering and return-cycle movements.
That is a different function from the front shovel's bucket-levelling linkage. Neither feature makes an unrelated demolition tool allowance applicable.
On the 385C FS, a parallelogram linkage and master cylinder maintain bucket attitude during penetration and boom raising. The auxiliary valve operates the bottom-dump circuit, with dedicated cylinders opening the bucket. Its 870-millimetre cab riser raises the operator's view for loading.
These are front-shovel arrangements, so a backhoe bucket's geometry or cab-height figure should not be transferred to the FS column. 385C FS, HEHH3118-1, March 2007.
The FS technical sheet separates main, swing and pilot circuits. Its tank refill is also separate from the complete hydraulic system including the tank. The original horsepower notes explicitly use metric horsepower.
Those qualifications matter when comparing a web listing with a brochure: a different horsepower unit is not evidence of a different engine tune. The FS swing torque is 260 kN·m; the earlier 191.8 lb-ft entry omitted the scale of the torque measurement.
The 39.5-metre pin height and 25.2-metre horizontal reach are genuine UHD demolition figures. Caterpillar's demolition listing also separates maximum tool mass over the front from tool mass for operation through the full circle. These values stay with the UHD front and its specified supporting configuration.
They do not extend the reach or permitted attachment mass of the standard mass-excavation machine. The UHD has its own boom-hook arrangement and tilting operator cab. Caterpillar's 385C UHD specification and equipment listing.
