Cat compactor and roller specifications

Drum contact and waste-wheel tips solve different problems

The CS and CP soil rollers should first be separated by the material being compacted. Cat describes smooth drums for granular and semi-cohesive soils, and padfoot drums for cohesive and semi-cohesive soils. A padfoot concentrates the load on small contact faces.

Its tapered pads penetrate the lift; the machine is not simply a smooth roller with more engine power. An engine-power ranking therefore cannot tell you which drum belongs on a particular fill.

Amplitude is another selection variable. Cat's dual-amplitude soil compactors use an eccentric-weight arrangement to select the vibration amplitude. Establish the actual drum and vibration equipment before comparing two used CS or CP listings.

A similar-looking chassis does not establish the same compaction setup.

The landfill machines in this directory need a different comparison. For the 836, Cat distinguishes Paddle tips for traction, Plus tips for lateral stability, and Combination arrangements that mix those functions. The waste-wheel arrangement belongs on the inspection list alongside the blade.

Cat lists straight, U and semi-U blade options, so a model badge alone does not establish the fitted pushing equipment. Compare the wheels and blade actually installed before treating an 836 listing as equivalent to another landfill compactor; those choices do not describe a CS smooth drum or a CP padfoot roller.
