Cat forestry machine specifications

Choose a forestry task before comparing engine power

The 527 track skidder illustrates why the forestry list separates extraction equipment from harvesting and loading machines. Caterpillar offers it as a cable machine or with a swing-boom grapple. That distinction determines how the timber is gathered; a horsepower ranking cannot tell you whether the required winch or grapple is installed.

Its skidder torque converter is also distinguished from a bulldozer converter in the original specification. Caterpillar describes the skidder arrangement as transmitting torque to the tracks for pulling, while the dozer comparison concerns varying blade loads. A front blade on a forestry machine does not make its entire powertrain equivalent to a construction dozer.

The 527 undercarriage places extended track support beneath the rear winch or grapple load. Cable and grapple configurations have different track-roller arrangements and equipped weights. The appropriate transport figure therefore needs the actual rear equipment, cab and shoes; the base name alone does not identify the complete load.

The grapple opening and grapple capacity answer different questions

The same 527 brochure separates sorting and bunching grapples. Their opening dimensions and rated enclosed areas appear in different rows. An opening that admits a stem is not a statement of lifting capacity, and the grapple area is not a log's weight.

Auto-Grab hydraulics maintain gripping pressure as the load shifts. That feature concerns retention by the grapple; it does not turn the timber bundle into a certified suspended-lift rating. Compare the complete attachment configuration and the intended extraction method before choosing among the skidder references below.
