Cat 511–552 feller bunchers: linkage, leveling and heads

Felling-head reach, tilt and carrier layout

A 532 fitted for bunching and a 532 carrying a harvesting front have different working envelopes. Caterpillar's small-carrier brochure puts the felling arrangement at 8.1 metres maximum reach with its head, while the processing arrangement reaches 9.8 metres. Those are front configurations.

The badge alone cannot select a lifting chart.

Start with the head mounting. Cat offered a partial lateral tilt and an optional full lateral tilt for these felling heads. The brochure describes forty degrees for the partial arrangement and 220 degrees for the full arrangement.

Head tilt changes how the saw can approach a stem; the separate upperstructure leveling mechanism changes the carrier's attitude. Confusing the two would give a buyer the wrong explanation of a machine's controls.

The 511 and 521 have fixed, non-leveling carbodies. A 522 or 532 uses a three-cylinder mechanism to position its upperstructure, with twenty degrees of forward adjustment and eleven degrees laterally. These adjustment angles do not establish an allowable working slope.

All four run nine lower rollers on each side, but their guarding differs: the smaller fixed-carbody pair has welded track guards, and the leveling pair has removable, bolted guards. The latter's track frames can also be bolted at a wider gauge.

Moving to a 541, 551 or 552 introduces a full-tail-swing carrier and another choice between standard and long felling linkage. Cat's long-front schedule places the bare-pin measurement farther out, at 8.2 metres. A standard-front figure taken at 6.6 metres describes a different load position.

Neither includes the cutting head. Choose the front before comparing these figures, then use its complete head-equipped load information for the intended work.

Cooling equipment also needs a physical check. The zero-tail-swing publication lists the reversing, variable-pitch Flexxaire fan as an option; the larger-carrier brochure identifies it as standard. An early small machine cannot be assumed to have that debris-clearing function.

Its side-by-side radiator and oil cooler remain accessible through the hydraulically opened clamshell service door. These arrangements help distinguish the actual unit from an advertisement assembled around a shared engine specification.
