Cat 554 to 574: forwarder
History and service record of 554 to 574
- Where Cat's forwarders came from. Skogsjan, a Swedish forest machine maker in Söderhamn, was sold to Caterpillar in 1997 and its machines changed from green to Cat yellow. Caterpillar kept building forwarders and harvesters in Söderhamn until 2004, when LogMax bought the forest machine production back to Sweden. Forest machines had been built on the site since the mid-1960s, when Kockums moved skidder production there. Eco Log builds harvesters on historic grounds, Nordic Wood Journal.
- The pendulum-arm heritage. The hydraulically controlled pendulum arms that later machines from Skogsjan and its successors carry trace back to the Skogsjan 'Spider Machine', first launched in 1986. Forest machines, Eco Log.
- Skogsjan, Caterpillar and Eco-Log. A 2011 owners' forum thread on Swedish-built cut-to-length machines describes the line as first sold as Skogsjan, then Caterpillar, then Eco-Log, calling it a very innovative but perhaps complicated construction, with hydraulic traction motors and an independently controlled hydraulic arm for each wheel or bogie.
