Cat 740 Bare Chassis specifications

The 740 bare chassis is the starting point for an OEM body

A bare 740 frame is not a completed dump truck with its body removed from the weight table. The intended tank, service module or specialty body determines what must be checked next. Ask for the finished conversion's axle-weight and attachment documentation before comparing its usable load with the headline truck rating.

Specify the body and cylinder supply before ordering

Cat's 740 chassis page describes a standard-wheelbase platform for water, fuel-and-lube, service and specialty bodies. The technical sheet distinguishes configurations with and without hoist cylinders. A fixed service module and a tipping body therefore need different supply decisions even though both begin with the 740 chassis.

The product page's operator-presence feature applies the parking brake when a gear is engaged without a seated operator. That describes the truck's control behavior. It does not document the separate pump, hose-reel or body controls supplied by a conversion manufacturer; request that equipment's instructions with the truck.

Hoist equipment and emissions package change the axle weights

The technical sheet separates highly regulated and lesser-regulated configurations, each with and without hoist cylinders. It provides a different bare weight and available payload for each combination, then splits those figures across the axles. The document explicitly warns the attachment designer not to exceed axle weights.

A total below the overall limit does not establish that each axle is within its allowance.

The dimensional schedule also distinguishes mirror width, tire width and fender width. Use the dimension that describes the actual clearance restriction; the rear frame width is not the travel width of the completed truck.

Keep older 740 engine records separate from the current frame

Caterpillar's earlier chassis leaflet lists a noncurrent 740 alongside 740B versions, with different power standards and regional engine entries. An advertisement saying only 740 C15 cannot establish that it is the same generation as the current frame. Match the engine and machine identification to the applicable specification edition before transferring a power figure.

The fuel and DEF columns require different units

The latest technical sheet distinguishes diesel storage from the smaller Tier4 DEF reservoir. Its fuel conversion also differs from the imperial figure printed beside the same metric capacity on the product page. The corrected fuel entry below follows the technical sheet and retains the earlier transcription explicitly.
