Cat 797: engine modules, supports and original specifications
The original truck has two engine modules to identify
The original 797 belongs to the 3524B generation. Caterpillar’s January 2000 engine training describes a pair of 3512B modules joined through an oil-cooled spring coupling. Each module has its own lubrication equipment, fuel transfer and priming equipment, turbochargers and aftercooler.
Cooling also has shared components: the jacket-water pump, flow switch and thermostats are on the front module. A front-module service record therefore cannot stand in for an inspection of the rear engine.
Electronic control is divided too. The master controller coordinates two subordinate controllers through CAN communication; the subordinate units receive local sensor inputs and operate the injectors. Caterpillar gives an air-restriction example in which a limit originating at the front engine causes both modules to reduce output together.
Equal power loss on both halves is therefore not proof that both have the same mechanical defect. For a diagnostic review, identify which controller recorded the originating condition before treating the combined engine as one undivided unit.

The 2002 launch comparison uses the original truck’s 5YW identifier and the replacement’s JSM prefix. Both use the 3TN engine-family prefix. An engine identifier alone will not distinguish their chassis, steering equipment or support arrangements.
Caterpillar’s change record identifies revised engine mounting rails as the permanent response to block cracking experienced on early trucks; it also records an interim field repair. That is a documented inspection lead, not a claim that every surviving 797 has cracked. Obtain the actual mount and repair history.
The replacement’s rear support castings changed, while its front supports moved lower in the chassis. The bulletin also distinguishes the original hand-operated fuel primers from the later electric equipment.
Steering changes were broader than the tire label. The successor received larger cylinders, revised linkage and hand-metering equipment, plus an additional accumulator. Do not order those components merely because a seller calls a truck an upgraded 797.
Match the chassis identity and any documented conversion.

History and service record of 797
- First unveiled. Caterpillar first unveiled a completed 797 on September 29, 1998, at its assembly plant in Decatur, Illinois; the first two units went to Caterpillar's Arizona proving grounds for testing, and the third and fourth were the first placed with a customer, at the Bingham Canyon Mine in Utah, in the second quarter of 1999. Wikipedia, Caterpillar 797.
- What it cannot do. A 797 cannot be driven on public roads between job sites: moving one requires disassembly into roughly 12 to 13 semi-trailer truck loads (engine, frame, axles and differential alone take six to seven), transport, and reassembly at the new site. Wikipedia, Caterpillar 797.
- Frame sets the service life. Every major component on the 797 can be serviced or replaced over the truck's life except the frame, so the truck's overall service life comes down to the frame's durability, which Caterpillar estimates at twenty years. Wikipedia, Caterpillar 797.
