Use the 980C serial range to choose its maintenance schedule

The available Caterpillar 980C maintenance extract identifies a 13B00300-UP machine powered by a 3406 engine. Its original publication date and later update date are different. Neither the update nor a seller's generic 980C description establishes that every serial prefix uses this exact schedule; match the machine identification before applying its service information.

For the stated machine, the schedule separates daily engine, transmission and hydraulic oil-level checks from later oil changes. It also names draining moisture and sediment from the air reservoir. An oil-change invoice alone does not demonstrate that these separate inspection and drain tasks were completed.

The monthly section lists checking brake-oil reservoir levels and testing the brakes as distinct tasks. It separately calls for the initial valve-lash adjustment on new or reconditioned engines at the first oil change. That first-service instruction is relevant when evaluating a rebuilt engine's records; it is not an instruction to adjust lash at every oil change.

Later interval items do not replace earlier ones: the schedule expressly carries the preceding service items forward.

Drive-train oil is not the engine-oil specification

Caterpillar's dated TDTO technical sheet includes a specifically named 980C brake-noise and stopping-distance test in its comparison programme. The sheet discusses friction performance for transmission clutches and wet brakes alongside gear-wear requirements. This is why a receipt naming only a viscosity does not fully identify the drive-train oil that was used.

The document distinguishes the TO-4 performance requirement from the available viscosity grades and directs selection back to the machine's operation manual or lubricant recommendations. A grade and a performance specification answer different questions; both need to match the compartment and operating conditions.

It also expressly excludes engine use for this drive-train product. Do not interpret a claim that one oil serves several transmission or final-drive applications as permission to put it in the 3406 engine. Keep the engine and drive-train fluid records separate.

The sheet's comparison programme is historical manufacturer evidence, not a current stopping-distance guarantee for a used 980C. It cannot replace the brake inspection and test required for the actual machine.
