A 992K with a poor boom soft stop at the bottom (a reply said factory advice was often unhelpful), an owner asking for a maintenance plan whose reply said the question sounded like a component-replacement schedule and that planned maintenance means tracking and diagnosing, and a buyer wanting photo comparisons of a 992C and a 994H. History and service record of 992
- Launch. Caterpillar officially launched the 992 in 1968, and the first production machine went to one of its field trial sites, the Duval mine at Twin Buttes, Arizona; with a 10-cubic-yard bucket and 15-ton capacity, that first 992 nearly doubled the capacity of Caterpillar's largest wheel loader at the time, the 988. - A 15-year gap before the next version. It took Caterpillar 15 years after the original 992 to introduce the next version, in 1992's 992C — an unusually long run for a single generation compared with the more frequent updates the line has had since. - What the 992C introduced. The 992C introduced the Z-Bar loader linkage the line still uses for its high payload capacity, a high-lift loader arm able to load 120-ton haul trucks, and Caterpillar's Electronic Monitoring System so the operator could track critical machine systems from the cab.
