Choose the D5H undercarriage before comparing power

A D5H Series II badge leaves an important choice unresolved. Cat's original brochure describes the standard arrangement for firm ground and demanding blade penetration. The XL moves its front idler forward to lengthen the footprint for finishing work.

LGP combines a wider gauge with long frames and broad shoes for soft ground. An XL's additional footprint does not make it the same undercarriage as an LGP.

The engine ratings also separate these arrangements. The brochure gives the standard tractor 120 flywheel horsepower, while XL and LGP receive 130; their gross ratings are higher. Compare equivalent rating definitions.

A seller's single horsepower figure cannot establish both the installed arrangement and the test basis.

Transmission choice matters when reading the speed rows. The brochure's planetary powershift uses a torque converter and provides three travel ranges in each direction. Its direct-drive alternative has six forward and reverse speeds, with a hydraulically applied, oil-cooled flywheel clutch.

The three-speed records below therefore describe the powershift examples, not every D5H offered. Inspect the controls and identify the transmission before ordering drivetrain work.

The prefix continues across a power change

Cat's former-model register splits the French-built 1DD LGP into pre-Series-II and later records. The earlier entry carries 120 flywheel horsepower; the later entry carries 130. The same prefix spans both.

Japanese-built 4KD records make the corresponding distinction. Record the complete machine number and configuration, rather than using the prefix alone to accept an advertised power rating. The register also gives different approximate equipped weights by period; those figures need their own conditions when compared with a sales brochure.

Track-adjuster parts need a narrower identification

An original parts-book extract for the early 1DD powershift application identifies the recoil and track-adjuster assembly separately from its telescoping frames. Its cylinder, piston, seal assembly and spring are individual entries. Fill and pressure-relief valves have separate part numbers too.

That distinction matters when a quote simply calls for a “track adjuster”: ask which assembly and components the quote includes, and match them to the machine's full identification. The early application sheet does not establish that a later Series II tractor uses the same complete group. It is a parts reference, not a procedure for releasing the loaded recoil spring.
