Cat D9T and D10T: steering, blade systems and refill scope

D9T differential steering keeps drive to both tracks

The July2007 D9T brochure describes a dual-twist tiller controlling direction, gear selection and steering. Its differential system changes the relative track speeds while transmitting power to both final drives. That differs from interpreting every large Cat dozer's steering as a clutch-and-brake arrangement.

The steering system has a dedicated variable-displacement pump and a fixed-displacement motor. The implement-flow figure therefore does not describe steering-pump output. Record which circuit a test concerns before comparing a measured flow with the specification table.

Blade automation needs its own equipment check. The AccuGrade Ready Option supplies the installation platform, including hydraulic and electrical provisions and mounting points. It does not establish that the GPS components and display are fitted.

Likewise, the standard valve being ready for a ripper does not mean a used D9T includes the rear attachment. Inspect the installed hardware and identify the blade package.

The D9T brochure separates steering relief pressure from blade, ripper and tilt-circuit pressure limits. Its hydraulic refill line is the tank capacity. Comparing that line with another machine's complete-system volume would give a false impression of the oil needed for the same service job.

D10T AutoCarry and blade-pitch presets perform different functions

The January2010 D10T specification describes Finger Tip Control for its steering clutches and brakes, alongside an electronically modulated powershift transmission. Its torque divider combines a converter path with a direct drive path. The D9T's differential-steering description should not be transferred to this D10T arrangement.

Dual tilt supplies blade-pitch control. Auto Blade Assist uses presets for the load, carry and spread parts of the push, while optional AutoCarry automatically controls the blade during the carry segment. AccuGrade and the site-plan guidance system are separately listed options.

Establish which system actually works during a demonstration instead of treating every electronic blade-control switch as equivalent.

For power comparisons, the D10T table distinguishes minimum-fan net output from its advertised net rating with maximum fan speed. The operating-weight note includes a blade, single-shank ripper and full fuel; its shipping figure has another equipment and fuel basis. Keep those conditions attached to a quotation.

The D10T oil table identifies engine oil with filters and specifies final-drive oil for each side. Its minimum-fan power rating is higher than the maximum-fan rating in the same document. Neither pair is a contradiction once the fan condition and refill boundary stay with the figures.

History and service record of D9T and D10T

Same lineage, one size apart. The D9 and D10 share a naming history, not just a size difference: Caterpillar's 1986-87 N-series renumbering pushed its whole large-dozer range up one model number (D8L became the D9N, D9L became the D10N), and today's D9T and D10T continue that same relative spacing, with the D9T's rated power well under the D10T's roughly 580 hp. Elevated sprocket design. Both the D9 and D10 use the elevated drive sprocket Caterpillar introduced on the original D10 in the 1970s, lifting the sprocket away from ground dirt and debris to cut undercarriage wear and ease maintenance compared with a ground-level sprocket.
