Cat M318D MH and M322D MH: handling fronts, supports and cab risers

The handling front is a configuration, not just a longer boom

Caterpillar's M318D MH brochure describes a separate closed swing circuit using a variable-displacement pump and a fixed-displacement motor. That arrangement permits combined swing and implement movements without making the swing function depend on the same pump supply. The tool circuit still needs the correct auxiliary valves.

Its medium-pressure function operates rotating tools; the optional second high-pressure valve supports an additional hydraulic function.

The same document allows ten tool presets containing flow and pressure settings. A saved tool name does not establish that the required valve is installed. Check the grapple's opening/closing and rotation connections separately.

Three selectable hydraulic response levels change control aggressiveness; they do not replace the attachment's required pressure and flow limits.

Cab movement and support arrangement affect the comparison

In AEHQ6364,the M318D hydraulic riser's parallelogram linkage keeps the cab level during movement. Two cylinders raise it; deceleration near the end of the stroke reduces abrupt stopping. The lowered position is designated for travel and shipment.

Emergency lowering is available from the cab and at ground level. Use the machine's operating manual for the actual lowering procedure and support precautions.

The same edition distinguishes a standard chassis with attached supports from the material-handling chassis with four welded outriggers. A further arrangement adds a blade ahead of the front stabilizers. Those layouts explain why the weight schedule has several support and boom rows.

They cannot be collapsed into one universal operating weight.

M318D stick choices in that edition include a4900mm drop-nose stick and a4200mm straight stick. High-pressure lines handle tool opening and closing; medium-pressure lines handle rotation. Match the selected front to its lifting chart before comparing it with the longer M322D configuration.

Keep the M322D identity and evidence separate

Caterpillar's non-current catalog identifies both handlers with a C6.6 ACERT engine, but publishes a higher weight range for M322D MH. The legacy reference also distinguishes their swing speeds and handling-front reach. Do not use a conventional M318D excavator forum title as a confirmed M318D MH fault report: the earlier title search found no exact handler-model title.
