Cat 345C MH: scrap tools, magnet controls and transport

Match the 345C MH front to the scrap attachment

The 345C MH's long front changes attachment selection. Caterpillar recommends the smaller 1.5 yd³ orange-peel grapple for its 18 m front and the larger 2.0 yd³ grapple for the 16.5 m front. Greater reach does not preserve the same tool recommendation.

A seller offering the larger grapple with the longer stick should supply the applicable lifting information instead of treating both published combinations as interchangeable.

The documented Walker magnet application is also tied to the shorter front. Its hydraulic generator and the grapple's rotation circuit are separate systems: a successful magnet demonstration does not establish that grapple rotation works, or vice versa. Inspect the controls and fitted tool connections for the intended job.

The original material-handler design includes dedicated circuits; it is more than a conventional excavator carrying a longer stick.

The C13 ACERT replaces the 3176C used in the earlier 345B Series II MH. A related owner's account involving the older engine cannot establish the cause of a C13 fault. The manufacturer describes electronic control of mechanically actuated unit injection on the C13.

Use that identification when obtaining engine-specific diagnostic information.

The magnet monitor distinguishes duty cycle, heat and electrical faults

The magnet monitor has separate indications for generator heat, voltage faults and ground faults. Its duty-cycle indicator refers to magnet-on time exceeding 7.5 minutes within ten minutes. Record which indicator appears; “magnet stopped” is too broad to distinguish the operator's duty cycle from an electrical fault.

A ground-fault indication can concern the magnet, generator or connecting cable, so replacing a magnet solely from that description would skip part of the circuit.

Transport preparation depends on the cab arrangement. Caterpillar describes a fixed riser that can tilt forward for shipping and separately lists an optional hydraulic riser. They are different mechanisms.

Confirm the fitted arrangement before accepting a transport height quoted for a tipped cab. The track frames can also be removed for shipping; an operating-width photograph does not describe the disassembled transport load.

Scrap-yard cooling equipment needs its own inspection. The oil cooler and condenser slide outboard to expose the gap beside the radiator. The reversing fan is optional in the original equipment list.

A fan running in a demonstration therefore does not prove automatic reversal is installed, and a clean outer screen alone leaves the space between the cores unexamined.
