Deere 320, 410 and 710 P-Tier: Heavy Lift, engines and transmissions

P-Tier backhoes: three choices beyond the horsepower column

The 320, 410 and 710 P-Tier share a family name, but their transmissions, rear structures and hydraulic settings differ. Deere's MB320PAU, MB410PAU and MB710PAU brochures separate those configurations. Their peak-power ratings also differ from the rated-speed figures in the earlier product-page record.

Compare the rating labels before treating either figure as a correction to the other.

320: Heavy Lift changes the hardware

Deere describes the 320's optional Heavy Lift package as larger rear structures and hydraulic cylinders. Its advertised improvement is up to 25 percent in lifting capacity and breakout force. Lift Mode is a separate hydraulic function.

The cylinder schedule identifies different boom, crowd and extendable-dipper dimensions for Heavy Lift, so the package cannot be identified merely by a switch label.

The 320 brochure pairs a five-speed AutoShift PowerShift transmission with a hydraulic reverser. Its travel-speed table uses 19.5L-24 rear tyres. Backhoe operation starts with mechanical levers; pilot controls with pattern selection are optional.

For a machine used to load and then excavate, check both operating positions: choosing the optional rear controls does not change the loader's standard clutch-cutoff switch.

410: distinguish the market's engine column

MB410PAU lists two 4.5 litre engines in separate emissions columns. The Final Tier 4/Stage IV EWL version has 116 net peak horsepower at 1900 rpm. The Tier 2/Stage II version has 101 at 2100 rpm.

Those are market configurations, not selectable power modes on one engine. Fan descriptions differ too: electronically controlled variable-rate suction for the former, viscous temperature control for the latter.

The 410's precision mode slows backhoe movements while retaining lift performance. Economy mode can be set separately for the loader and excavator ends. A lighting option adds boom-mounted LED floodlights; the brochure does not make that kit standard.

Identify the engine and fitted equipment before comparing a used 410 with an apparently identical listing from another market.

710: its own driveline and lift-mode pressure

The 710 brochure identifies a PowerTech Plus 4045HT084 series-turbocharged 4.5 litre engine. The historical discussion of a 6.8 litre 710L concerns another generation. MB710PAU specifies a four-speed AutoShift transmission, whereas the smaller machines' brochures specify five speeds.

Its speed table assumes MFWD and 21L-28 rear tyres.

The 710 hydraulic table distinguishes normal backhoe relief pressure of 3625 psi from 3900 psi in Lift Mode. The 320's corresponding lift setting is 4000 psi. A higher setting therefore does not, by itself, rank the complete machines' lifting capacity.

Deere publishes separate digging and lifting configurations; the 710 digging schedule names the bucket and boom-angle basis. Use the matching configuration and load chart for a lift.

The 320 entries below include skid-steer complaints, while 410E/410K and 710G reports concern earlier backhoes. The 710 utility-tractor note describes a different machine. Those identities exclude a P-Tier fault diagnosis from model numbers alone.

Problems owners and mechanics have posted about the 320, 410, and 710

The separate Deere320/324/330 skid-steer report retains the complete320 cranking, brake-release and F9H9 hydraulic-lock account. Those skid-steer observations do not identify a fault on a320 P-Tier backhoe.

Drive selection, sensors and hydraulics. A 2013 410K would not move and showed a message to return the shift lever to neutral, with a reply pointing to the seat position reading in the service menu; another 2013 410K had strong down-force but no lift on the boom; and a 410E had been stuck in four-wheel drive for months, with a reply pointing to the fuse and solenoid that must be powered to release front-wheel drive. Three machines, three different complaints.

Intermittent electronic and fuel faults on the 710G. A 2005 710G that intermittently alarmed with a stop symbol and would not move in forward or reverse, and a 710G with a rough idle that bogged under load, where a reply pointed to the tank pickup strainer and the fabricated rubber hose. A third thread is a 710 tractor whose rear arms would not lower and whose clutch needed attention.
