Identify the original L-Series axle and winch package

Deere's original L-Series brochure makes Outboard-Extreme axles standard on the 848L and 948L, optional on the 748L, and unavailable on the 640L and 648L. The axle arrangement is therefore a configuration question when choosing a 748L, rather than something established by its model name alone.

The brochure also separates winch arrangements by drum and speed. Its 640L standard-speed entry differs from the 648L and 748L entry, while the two-speed arrangement has separate low and high entries. A line-speed comparison needs the actual winch and drum, not just the engine designation.

The manufacturer dimension drawings state overall height in millimetres and inches; the earlier feet-labelled heights are retained below only as unit-error records.

Deere also describes pressurized axle lubrication, independent axle filters and axle-oil-pressure monitoring. These form a separate service system from engine lubrication. Its published axle-life claim excludes dual-tire configurations, so that claim should not be transferred to a dual-equipped sale machine without checking its applicable documentation.

L-II literature describes changes to check, not equipment to assume

The later L-II brochure describes revised wiring and hose routing, stronger winches and articulation-speed sensors that cushion steering near frame contact. These changes make the generation suffix useful during an inspection. A machine advertised merely as an L-Series skidder should not automatically receive the later publication's equipment description.

The L-II document also adds the six-wheel 768L-II bogie machine and expands the grapple choices. It describes a two-speed 4000 winch in contrast with the previous single-speed arrangement. When comparing an original L candidate with an L-II advertisement, inventory the axles, grapple and winch separately; a shared three-digit model prefix does not make those packages identical.

Its maintenance section distinguishes a programmable reversing cooling fan and swing-out cooling-package access. Inspect what the actual machine has and demonstrate its available cleaning function. The later brochure's service intervals belong with its own model and equipment instructions, rather than being applied to an older skidder simply because both use a CVT.

The L-II grapple description identifies constant clamping pressure separately from grapple opening. Include that pressure-control behaviour in the equipment discussion: a larger opening does not by itself describe how the tongs retain a disturbed load or which grapple package is installed.
