D20S and D21S are small shovel loaders with different transmissions

The historical Komatsu range sheet puts D20S-5 and D21S-5 in its bucket-equipped shovel range. Its transmitting-system row identifies direct drive for D20S-5 and Hydroshift for D21S-5. The same distinction appears between D20Q-5 and D21Q-5. A bucket loader wearing a D20 or D21 designation should therefore be compared by its actual transmission, rather than treated as a blade dozer with another trim name.

The S-model columns show assembled triple-grouser shoes, while the Q-model columns identify swamp shoes. Both Q machines have a wider track gauge than the S pair in that document. These are undercarriage arrangements to identify on the machine, not evidence that a track-loader model is suitable for every soft-ground job.

The brochure separately reports width without the bucket and bucket width. On the Q pair, the bucket extends beyond the listed machine width. Use the installed attachment when checking a narrow entrance; the outside-track figure alone does not describe the whole loading tool.

Komatsu also lists static tipping load separately from breakout force. A force available for digging into a pile is not a suspended-load rating. The original comparison retains both fields, rather than using whichever larger number makes the machine appear more capable.

A request for more traction is not a demonstrated productivity result

In the linked D21Q discussion, a residential contractor was looking for a loader to move loose material in muddy, confined sites. The questions concerned usable traction, truck loading and whether the little crawler would suit that work. A respondent recalled different steering controls and powershift arrangements on machines he had operated.

That exchange does not identify a dash-5 serial number or provide a measured comparison against a modern track skid loader. Treat its reported experience as a reason to inspect the actual controls and demonstrate the intended material-handling task, rather than as a factory specification or a promised production advantage.

Keep the shovel comparison separate from the D20P blade models

The neighbouring D20P-6A comparison has blade width, blade height and direct-drive or Hydroshift dozer columns. This page instead needs bucket reach, dumping clearance and loading geometry. Sharing a broad D20/D21 name does not make either table a complete answer to the other's equipment question.
