Komatsu D60P-12–D85P-18: direct drive, EXL tracks and serial changes

D60P direct drive, D65P clutch steering and D65PX HSS

Komatsu’s Japanese D65-12E selection chart separates three arrangements that a broad horsepower comparison can hide. The D60P-12 uses direct drive. The D65P-12 has TORQFLOW with clutch-and-brake steering, while the D65PX-12 combines TORQFLOW with hydrostatic steering.

Identify the drive and steering together. TORQFLOW describes the travel transmission; HSS describes how the tracks are controlled during a turn.

The final specification spread puts five forward selections against the D60P direct-drive configuration, while the TORQFLOW machines have three. The D60P-12E table also shows different travel speeds in those selections. Familiar controls or a similar wet-ground track arrangement do not make the driving procedure interchangeable.

Match the operator’s book to the installed drivetrain before a demonstration.

EXL means a longer carriage, not the PX swamp arrangement

The original German EX/EXL/PX brochure explicitly identifies the D65EXL-12 as the long-undercarriage version. Its eight lower rollers and forty-five shoes per side differ from the standard EX’s seven rollers and thirty-nine shoes. The PX also has an eight-roller carriage, but its wide swamp shoes are another configuration.

Counting rollers alone does not identify which of these tractors is being sold.

The EXL’s published blade choices are tied to shoe width. Its semi-U blade appears with a different capacity and permitted shoe width from the straight tilt blade. Read that attachment row with the track specification.

A bucket-like capacity number without the blade type cannot establish the width, transport length or cutting-depth arrangement.

The same brochure distinguishes a 35-amp alternator from the pair of 140-amp-hour batteries. Battery capacity is not alternator output. It also gives sixty-five millimetres as ordinary grouser height; that dimension should not be presented as the distance between track pins.

These distinctions help when checking an electrical replacement or an undercarriage quotation.

Refill columns and hydraulic diagrams have serial limits

Shop manual SEBM001919 gives both specified capacity and refill quantity. In its early D65P-12 range, the engine-oil entries are forty-four and thirty-eight litres respectively. The power-train case similarly has separate total and refill figures.

A dry system and an ordinary service change should not be assigned the same amount merely because both numbers are printed in one row.

The early D65P-12 lubricant table ends at serial 60890, while the corresponding D65PX-12 range ends at 60914. Later work-equipment diagrams begin with the next serial in each sequence. Within those diagrams, straight-tilt and power-pitch equipment are separate, including their pump and selector arrangements.
