Komatsu D65EX-12, D65WX-15, and D85E-21 specifications

Identify the D65 engine edition before choosing between these dozers

The D65WX-15 designation appears on two substantially different Komatsu brochures. The earlier Tier 2 sheet describes an SA6D125E-3 engine. The Tier 3 publication identifies an SAA6D114E-3.

A seller’s model name alone cannot identify which engine, emissions equipment or service parts belong to the tractor. Read its engine plate.

The earlier brochure also describes a hydraulically driven cooling fan whose speed responds to coolant and hydraulic-oil temperatures. It permits reversing the fan for cleaning the radiator and oil-cooler cores. That is a useful feature to demonstrate on a dusty machine; fan reversal and the ordinary temperature-controlled operation are separate checks.

Its service layout places the transmission and steering-system filters, power-train level gauge and hydraulic tank on the right. The monitor can alternate a user code with the service-meter display. Record the actual code before discussing a repair: a transmission complaint without that information leaves out evidence the machine can supply.

WX and WX PAT have different undercarriages

In the Tier 3 brochure, ordinary WX combines the EX track-contact length with the wider PX track gauge. The WX PAT has an extended contact length and an additional bottom roller on each side. The PAT machine is therefore more than a blade option bolted onto an otherwise identical WX.

The same publication separates gross output, net output and net output with the hydraulic fan at maximum speed. Keep those conditions attached when comparing its engine with the D65EX-12 or D85E-21 columns. Comparing the largest advertised output with another tractor’s net rating overstates the difference.

Ground pressure needs a similar qualification. The WX undercarriage table identifies its pressure as the tractor figure; a separate blade-equipment table gives pressure for the equipped operating condition. Shoe width, blade and rear equipment must match before using those figures to choose a machine for soft ground.

The earlier D65EX-12 uses a different shift action

The D65EX-12 brochure describes changing gear by twisting the left-hand joystick. The later PCCS arrangement uses thumb switches. Try the appropriate control during inspection instead of assuming the two cabs operate alike.

Komatsu’s EX-12 specifications also distinguish lower track rollers from upper carrier rollers. The earlier reference entry confused them. Its transmission table lists speeds separately for each gear and unit: the first-gear metric entry cannot serve as the maximum speed in miles per hour.

The corrected rows retain those distinctions.
