KX018-4 and U17: the narrow setting is an access width

Both machines in this comparison have retractable tracks, but their working widths differ. The original U17 manual distinguishes the narrow position used to pass through a restricted opening from the standard position used for operation. Do not treat a narrow doorway measurement as the stance in which the excavator should perform its digging work.

On the U17 control arrangement illustrated in that manual, a selector assigns the shared control to either track-width adjustment or dozer operation. With width change selected, pushing the control forward widens the tracks and pulling it back narrows them. After adjustment, the selector must return to the dozer position.

A blade that does not respond as expected deserves a check of that selection before a cylinder fault is assumed.

The U17 instruction requires the selector to be fully set. A partly selected position is not an intermediate operating width or a way to combine blade and track functions. Use the complete manual procedure on firm, even ground, with the work area clear.

The KX018-4 uses its own width and auxiliary controls

The Australian KX016-4/KX018-4 manual shows a separate track-width lever: raising it extends the tracks and lowering it retracts them. Its dozer extensions have their own retaining pins. Check both the track stance and the blade setup when preparing the KX018-4 for a narrow route; they are separate adjustments.

The same edition distinguishes the boom-swing pedal from the auxiliary hydraulic pedal. Moving the auxiliary pedal in opposite directions supplies different attachment pipes. A pedal-operated auxiliary circuit does not, by itself, establish that a particular thumb or breaker is connected correctly.

Its two-pattern selector changes the boom and arm assignments between the main control levers. Change the pattern only with the engine stopped and secure the selector lock. A machine that responds differently from another excavator may have a different selected pattern; establish that before treating the response as a hydraulic fault.

These instructions belong to the named earlier KX018-4 and U17 editions. They do not describe the later U17-5 simply because the model numbers begin alike.
