Broderson IC40A specifications

Reconcile the IC40A reference with the IC-40-2A manufacturer sheet

The IC40A reference should be read as an industrial carry-deck crane, rather than as a large rough-terrain crane. Broderson's June 2006 engineering sheet identifies the IC-40-2A with four-wheel drive and four-wheel steering for in-plant lifting. That combination is a material difference from smaller industrial machines that drive and steer different axles.

The manufacturer gives a wheelbase of 6 ft 6½ in. The inherited 6.54 in entry is an unresolved unit error, not a usable chassis dimension. Its published minimum turning radius is 9 ft 10 in, and the minimum aisle for a right-angle turn is 8 ft. Those describe different manoeuvres.

For an aisle assessment, match the intended turn and the offered machine's actual clearance rather than substituting the wheelbase.

The engineering sheet states 9,000 lb at a 4 ft load radius. The old 7,000 lb maximum entry is retained below as a discrepancy, rather than used as the manufacturer's maximum. Capacity farther from the crane still requires the appropriate chart.

The carry chart and extension restriction answer different questions

The IC-40-A technical sheet publishes a 7,200 lb pick-and-carry maximum separately from its outrigger rating. It also expressly prohibits pick-and-carry with a load on the boom extension. An extension advertised with a used crane therefore adds a chart-selection question; its presence does not extend the carry rating to the extension tip.

Its options list distinguishes a straight extension from an offsettable version, and distinguishes the searcher hook from the main hoist. Check the equipment arrangement described in the offer. The same publication offers a diesel engine as an alternative to the standard dual-fuel arrangement, so the fuel system needs identification independently of the boom equipment.

Base mass is not the equipped travel mass

Broderson's historical axle-load schedule records the IC-40-2A at 8,840 lb base weight and 9,210 lb typical equipped weight, with separate front and rear loads for each. The schedule defines its typical package using an operator, rigid extension, diesel and cab. An equipped crane can therefore differ from the catalogue's base-weight row without either figure describing a measured sale machine.

Use the equipment inventory and applicable axle-load record when arranging transport.
