Case IH Farmall 31 to Farmall 50C specifications

A Farmall 31 gear tractor is a different mowing choice

The original Farmall compact brochure separates the 31's gear and hydrostatic versions. Its gear tractor has more claimed PTO power, while the hydrostatic version offers pedal-controlled travel. The Farmall 35 in that same schedule is hydrostatic only.

A listing that treats the two names as equivalent misses a useful distinction: the 31 can be the simple gear-drive choice, while the 35 does not supply that alternative in this edition.

The brochure's mid-PTO wording needs care. Its general description says a mid PTO is unavailable with gear transmissions, but the specification matrix marks the manual Farmall 31 entry as optional. Those statements conflict.

Neither establishes that an individual used tractor has the required shaft and controls. Verify that equipment on the tractor before buying a belly-driven implement; the rear PTO rating cannot resolve the discrepancy.

Distinguish the L340 from the larger L350 installation

The 2009 loader compatibility sheet assigns the L340 to Farmall 31 and 35 tractors. Farmall 40, 45 and 50 use the listed L350 arrangement. The two loaders differ in lift capacity, pin height and breakout force.

Read all three columns. A breakout number describes a different part of the lift cycle from capacity at maximum height, so it cannot tell you what the tractor will place on a high rack.

The later compact C cab brought a different operator space

Case IH's January 2017 compact C announcement covers the later 40C and 50C as cab or ROPS configurations. Their larger platform and revised controls belong to that later group, not to every earlier Farmall 40. The deluxe seat has an adjustable backrest and armrests, with its mounting plane inclined to accommodate taller operators.

During a viewing, check whether the seat still travels freely and whether the rear view toward the drawbar and hitch suits the implement you will use. The announcement specifically identifies that rear visibility as part of the redesign.
