Cat 824G II, 824H and 844 models: controls, blades and equipment
Classification: Cat wheel-dozer identification.The 824G Series II uses Command Control steering
The Series II has a steering-wheel system whose position relates directly to articulation through mechanical feedback. Caterpillar describes quarter-turn movement from side to side, with transmission controls integrated at the wheel. It should not be confused with the STIC lever used on larger wheel dozers.
Check the steering layout in the cab before applying operating advice from an 844H listing.
The left pedal has a decelerator function before its braking portion. Cat describes the first half of travel as engine deceleration, followed by brake engagement. That differs from reducing impeller-clutch rimpull while retaining engine speed.
Note the pedal position, throttle-lock state and engine response separately when assessing how a used Series II slows down.
The brochure’s configured operating weight includes the straight blade, operator and full fluids. Its tire-option table then gives changes relative to the standard set, not a second set of complete tire weights to add to that total. The counterweight and roading-fender options have their own additions.
Establish the actual combination before comparing transport weights.
The engine is the 3406E with air-to-air aftercooling in the August 2002 publication. The cover and engine table distinguish gross output from flywheel output, although a body paragraph calls the higher figure net. Use the named rating in the engine table and keep the document inconsistency explicit.

The October 2007 824H table assigns the straight blade its own capacity and width. The 14.78-foot figure is width; it is not cubic yards. Its 4.67-cubic-metre capacity belongs to that blade, while the larger coal attachment has a separate capacity.
Confirm the attachment before comparing material volumes across the family.
The September 2007 844H is another engine and hydraulic arrangement, with a C27 ACERT and separate implement/brake and steering/fan circuits. Its refill page prints both a general hydraulic-tank entry and smaller tank-only compartment entries. Keep those labels with the figures.
Adding them indiscriminately or using one compartment as the whole system would turn a reference comparison into an incorrect refill instruction.

History and service record of 824G Series II to 844H
- Torque converter as a left-pedal brake. Cat's 844H brochure says the impeller clutch torque converter lets the operator modulate rimpull and slow the machine with the left pedal without reducing engine speed, which keeps full hydraulic power for blade and steering and gives a hydrostatic feel. 844H Wheel Dozer brochure, Caterpillar.
- Lock-up and automatic blade positioning.
