Cat 834G: blade dimensions, lock-up and cooling

Classification: Cat wheel-dozer identification.

Blade choice changes the 834G’s transport dimensions

The 834G is an articulated wheel dozer with the 3456 engine. Its straight, universal and coal blades are separate equipment arrangements. Caterpillar’s January 2002 drawing gives a shorter overall length with the straight blade than with the universal blade; their operating weights differ too.

Use the blade actually fitted when preparing a low-loader movement or checking a stockpile route.

The imperial blade-width and blade-height entries in the original drawing are inches. The straight blade’s 199.8-inch width is paired with 5,074 mm, while its 57.5-inch height accompanies 1,461 mm. Those figures cannot be read as feet.

Ground clearance, cutting depth and maximum tilt have their own measurement rows; none is the machine’s overall height. A coal blade has larger wings and a different clearance envelope, so an earthmoving-blade dimension is not a substitute.

The listed straight-blade operating mass already includes that blade. Adding its complete attachment weight again would double-count it. The universal and coal arrangements each have their own total, which is the useful starting point for a configured-machine check.

Lock-up speed and cooling identify different operating questions

The G-Series transmission offers converter-drive and direct-drive speed schedules. First forward gear has lock-up disabled. A higher maximum listed for direct drive is therefore not evidence of a missing forward gear when the machine is working through the converter.

Keep the drive state with any recorded ground-speed complaint.

The left pedal also changes transmitted rimpull before applying the brakes. That lets engine speed remain available for hydraulic work while the operator reduces wheel effort. A blade-response check made with reduced wheel pull is not the same test as a full-traction pushing run.

Cooling hardware is another generation boundary. The G brochure describes the AMOCS package; the H introduction records a move from thermostatic wax-capsule fan control to electronic fan control and a different modular radiator family. Identify that hardware before using an H-Series cooling diagnosis on a G.

An engine-temperature complaint needs the actual fan-control arrangement, not simply the shared 834 name.
