History and service record of D10N and D10R
- Why the model number jumped. Caterpillar renumbered its whole large-dozer line with the N-series in 1986-87, pushing every large model up one number: the D9N replaced the D8L and the D10N replaced the D9L, which is why a D10N is not simply a bigger D9 but a continuation of the D9L's own lineage under a new number. - First with the elevated sprocket. The D10 line was the first modern Caterpillar tractor to use an elevated drive sprocket, moving it up away from the ground and dirt to improve durability, operator comfort and ease of maintenance — a layout Caterpillar has kept on its large dozers since. - The original D10's production run. The first D10, built from 1977 to 1987, was superseded by the D11; the smaller D9L's own successor was then rebranded as the D10N, which is the model line the current D10R and D10T continue. Wikipedia, Caterpillar D10.
