What changed from the 920 to the 916

Caterpillar's original French 916 brochure describes a turbocharged 3204 driving a Z-bar loader linkage. Bucket rollback at carrying position helps retain material; the linkage also provides visibility towards the bucket corners. Earthmoving, loose-material and penetration buckets are separate choices, with different capacities.

The larger loose-material bucket is not evidence that the same payload suits every material.

Central articulation increased from the 920's 35 degrees to 40 degrees on the 916. That tighter turn matters in a loading yard, but straight-ahead tipping weight is not the full-turn load limit. The brochure also describes pressure-compensated loader controls intended to maintain equipment speed as the load changes.

The radiator uses narrow chevron-arranged modules that can be cleaned and replaced individually. Inspect the module joints and access as well as the exposed core face. The loader-valve layout permits adding auxiliary valve sections without treating the entire bank as one inseparable unit.

An extra lever still needs its matching hydraulic circuit before an attachment can use it.

A forward-drive complaint after applying the brake

In the linked owner discussion, a warm 916 lost forward drive after braking while reverse remained available. Forward returned after shutdown and a wait. The mechanic responding asked for the complete serial number because different prefixes and arrangements existed.

He also described a left brake pedal that disengages the transmission, allowing engine speed for loader hydraulics while the machine stops.

His suggested first observation was whether that pedal returned freely, including checking for debris around the foot controls. The owner thanked him, but the thread ends with another member asking whether cleaning the pivot actually fixed it. No confirmed repair appears.

Use the account to describe the brake/drive interaction to a technician, not as proof that every forward-drive failure needs a pedal repair. Secure the loader before inspecting its controls.

Order filters by circuit as well as engine

Baldwin groups the 916 and G916 with the 3204 engine, listing separate hydraulic-tank and transmission elements alongside primary and spin-on fuel filters. It also distinguishes ordinary and upgraded outer air elements from the inner element. The neighbouring 918F uses a different engine and different transmission-filter entries.

A common lube-filter listing across those rows does not establish a complete interchangeable service kit.
