Cat 966E and 966F: edition, repower and transmission-control differences

Identify the 966F edition before applying a Series II description

The 966F sales booklet linked below is explicitly headed Series II. It describes a turbocharged 3306 engine, planetary PowerShift and a Z-bar loader front. Its automatic Ride Control is optional and uses an accumulator in the lift-cylinder circuit.

An older 966F listing does not establish that the pictured machine has that option or all of the later booklet's equipment.

The optional high-lift arrangement changes both the lift arms and tilt cylinder. Its increased reach is therefore a front-equipment difference, separate from choosing a larger bucket. Keep that arrangement with the clearance and tipping-load figures when comparing machines for a high-sided truck.

The Series II booklet also distinguishes limited-slip axle options from the optional NoSPIN rear differential. A general “differential lock” description does not identify which axle arrangement is fitted. Its modular radiator and swing-open grille provide specific inspection access, rather than proof that cooling performance remains satisfactory.

The transmission control reads switches and speed signals

Cat's SENR5922-02 systems description for the 4YG 966F explains communication between the transmission control and Computerized Monitoring System. The display can report control faults as well as speed, gear and direction information. Record the diagnostic identity before treating a displayed warning as a failed internal clutch.

The neutralizer switch reacts to brake-oil pressure and removes the direction request. The override switch serves a different purpose: it allows the request to remain when braking. Establish the switch positions before interpreting a loss of drive during brake application.

The same document gives different Ride Control switch arrangements for air-over-hydraulic and hydraulic-over-hydraulic brake machines. It also warns that the shared controller recognizes different machine equipment. A connector diagram or switch test needs the actual machine configuration; an illustration from another brake arrangement can lead to the wrong circuit.

966E and 966F repowers explain some engine discrepancies

The manufacturer repower list names the 966E prefix99Y and 966F prefix4YG separately. It lists C7 conversions for both and a C7.1 alternative for the identified 966F arrangement. These are replacement-engine programs, not evidence that every E or F left the factory with that engine.

Retain both machine and engine identities when assessing a converted loader.

4YG Transmission Controller And Brake ScopeSENR5922-02 October1994/updateJune2001: transmission controller links CMS through Cat Data Link; neutralizer switch removes direction request on brake pressure. Override differs. Ride Control switch circuitry differs between air-over-hydraulic and hydraulic-over-hydraulic brake arrangements; equipment coding matters. [source]
Separate SeriesII Brochure Equipment ScopeOpened 966F booklet is SeriesII: 3306 turbo, four forward/four reverse planetary PowerShift, Z-bar front. High lift changes lift arms and tilt cylinder; optional Ride Control uses lift accumulator and automatic activation at9.7 km/h (6 mph). This edition does not establish all equipment on an earlier966F. [source]
