Cat 988B specifications
Establish the B-series machine before planning a move
The 988B uses Caterpillar's turbocharged 3408 V8. In the original AEHQ3668 brochure, 375 hp is power at the flywheel after accessory deductions, not a gross-engine figure. The transmission has four forward and four reverse speeds, with a variable-capacity torque converter.
That mechanical package differs from the later electronic 988G and C18-powered H; their control and engine descriptions do not identify a B-series machine.
Caterpillar's operating schedule includes the sound-suppressed cab, ROPS, specified tyres, a full fuel tank and an operator. Its optional-equipment schedule treats counterweight and tyre arrangements separately. Added ballast changes both machine mass and tipping load; the brochure specifically says to use tyre ballast or counterweight for the extra static-tipping capacity, not both.
Follow the applicable arrangement rather than adding every option's claimed benefit.

The 2024 discussion initially titled “Old Old CAT 988b Wheel Loader Weight — author corrected machine to 980B” contains a material correction. Its author later says the dead loader is a 980B. The early weight guesses and the recovery account therefore concern a different model.
Retaining the title as a dated search result does not turn those guesses into a 988B specification.
The poster described a long-abandoned machine with fire damage and a seized turbo. Later posts discuss getting that particular loader onto a lowbed. They do not establish a standard 988B transport mass or an approved recovery procedure.
Confirm the identification plate and the actual fitted equipment before using any B-series document to arrange the movement.

The original bucket guide separates straight-edge rock, V-edge rock, abrasion-oriented spade-nose and general-purpose loose-material buckets. Their clearance and breakout entries occupy different columns. A general-purpose bucket for easy-loading stockpiles is not the same purchase as an impact-oriented rock bucket.
Identify the edge, teeth and bucket assembly when comparing the historical table below with a seller's machine; capacity alone does not establish the matching geometry.
