Cat 988F Series II: bucket ratings, rimpull and service differences

The 988F II's controls separate rimpull from loader response

Cat's original product description pairs the 3408E's HEUI injection with a variable-capacity torque converter. The converter lets the operator vary rimpull for the surface. The left pedal disengages the transmission while permitting higher engine speed for hydraulic response.

Those functions explain why throttle position alone cannot describe a loading demonstration.

STIC combines steering and transmission control; lift and tilt controls remain on the right. The quick-shift feature changes from first forward to second reverse. Optional ride control addresses load retention during travel, while Payload Control System II measures bucket loads.

Neither option follows automatically from the model name.

Match the bucket column before using a tipping figure

The twenty-ninth Performance Handbook gives separate 988F II columns for teeth, bolt-on segments, bolt-on cutting edge, Modulok, quarry and high-lift buckets. Their struck and heaped capacities differ, as do dump clearance, breakout force and tipping loads. Picking the largest entry from several columns would describe no single arrangement.

Its load schedule specifies tyres, full fuel and other fluids, and an operator. It also states a breakout-force measurement position behind the cutting edge. A high-lift machine needs the high-lift column even when its engine matches the standard loader.

Production-study fuel use is not a universal hourly allowance

Cat's December 2000 comparison tested a standard 988F II, a high-lift 988F II and a 988G loading trucks at its Tucson proving ground. The standard and high-lift machines carried different buckets and tyre constructions. Their results belong to those fitted machines.

The report distinguishes a maximum-production exercise from a test intended to represent quarry constraints. It warns that short, heavily loaded tests omit delays such as waiting for trucks and cleanup. Use its material-per-fuel comparisons in that context.

Do not budget an entire shift from the short test's hourly burn.

Service parts also differ from the preceding 988F

Baldwin's application catalogue lists the 988F's 3408 and the Series II's 3408E separately. The Series II entry includes a fuel/water separator and attachment oil-cooler filters alongside its case-drain and transmission filters. Check each installed housing when assembling a service kit; a list headed simply “988F” misses those distinctions.
