What changed with the 988G loading package

Caterpillar's November 2000 introduction identifies the 988G as the replacement for the 988F Series II. Its 3456 EUI is a six-cylinder engine, replacing the predecessor's 3408E. The new articulated frame also uses a fabricated box boom instead of traditional plate lift arms.

Buying an older 988 by horsepower alone misses that engine and linkage change; identify the actual generation before comparing overhaul parts or front-end components.

The introductory bulletin separates the radiator and demand fan from the engine compartment. Outside air enters through the side and upper vents, and the AMOCS coolant circuit makes two passes through the radiator. That description explains the cooling layout to inspect on a G-series unit.

It does not justify borrowing refill quantities from the H: even the early G bulletin and the later G specification sheet show different cooling and axle entries.

The later G brochure puts 35.4 and 23.5 in its kilometres-per-hour column for top converter-drive forward and reverse travel. Those entries are not mph. Separate direct-drive rows reach 24.0 mph forward and 15.6 mph reverse; lock-up is disabled in first forward.

The optional lock-up arrangement therefore matters when comparing travel figures.

Its bucket schedule also separates heaped and struck capacity. Across the listed buckets, the heaped range is 8.2–9.2 cubic yards; the struck values are smaller. Width, teeth, wear protection and the point used to measure clearance change with the bucket column.

Select the actual bucket first. A single maximum-capacity entry cannot supply its dump clearance or breakout force.

The wiring thread does not establish a hydraulic repair

The linked 2016 G-series discussion concerns a horn that failed normally but sometimes sounded with the lights switched on, together with an intermittent radio. The reply asks for the serial number. No completed diagnosis or repair appears in that exchange.

For that particular symptom, record which electrical loads are switched on and obtain the matching schematic; the neighbouring 988/XE implement-sensor account does not explain the reported lighting interaction.
