John Deere 317 P-Tier specifications and model identification
Identify which John Deere 317 is in the advertisement
The P-Tier tracked loader uses a Yanmar engine and rubber tracks. The earlier 300-Series wheeled 317 uses Deere’s PowerTech engine and chain final drives. Both have appeared with a headline power figure of sixty-one horsepower, but that number describes net output on the P-Tier and gross output on the older skid steer.
Matching that headline alone would select the wrong engine and running gear.
Deere’s older 317 brochure also offers high-flow hydraulics as an option. Its standard flow is not proof that the extra circuit is fitted. Confirm the auxiliary package on the actual wheeled machine before matching an attachment; the P-Tier specification cannot establish which options an older 317 carries.
Source: Deere 300-Series skid-steer brochure, 317 engine, chain drive and hydraulic schedules, pages 16–17.Track width and bucket choice change the P-Tier measurements
The P-Tier’s wider track option reduces the published ground pressure while increasing both operating weight and overall width. That choice affects a narrow entrance and the load on a trailer as well as flotation. Deere’s dimension drawing gives separate lengths and dump heights for foundry and construction buckets.
The higher hinge pin does not mean the bucket clears an equally high truck side.
The loader-performance schedule likewise separates bucket breakout from boom breakout and distinguishes the two buckets. Read the bucket heading before comparing forces. Its rated operating capacities also use different percentages of tipping load; the higher percentage is a different rating basis, not extra machine weight or a replacement for the lower-percentage rating.

The linked TractorByNet reviews describe mowing decks, a tiller, a Kohler engine and garden-tractor steering. Those accounts concern the garden tractor. They cannot establish the tracked loader’s steering equipment, dependability or repair costs.
Their historical review totals remain identified separately below.
The same distinction matters when reading a forum title or a used listing without a suffix. Ask for the identification plate and a photograph of the whole machine before treating a bare 317 name as a P-Tier specification. A mower attachment, four tires and a tracked undercarriage describe different purchases.

Historical used-listing matches for the 317 name
The 2026-09-24 MachineryTrader snapshot retained 438 John Deere listing matches for the 317 name on its first results page. Its 2005–2024 year range predates the dated P-Tier brochure; the name-match totals do not establish that every advertised machine is a 317 P-Tier.

What do the older John Deere 317 garden-tractor reviews describe?
For the separately identified 317 garden tractor, the historical TractorByNet record shows 6 owner reviews, an average 4.7 of 5. The garden-tractor reviewers most often named no power steering; that observation does not describe the P-Tier loader. These are owners' opinions, not test results, and a small number of reviews is a weak signal.
