History and service record of 318

  • What it replaced. The 318 P-Tier replaced the long-running 318G, keeping the sub-63-inch width and pickup-towable weight that made the 318G a rental and landscaper staple, while adding the P-Tier's larger sealed cab, standard EH ISO joysticks, and options like ride control, self-leveling, and a rearview camera. Skid Picker review of the 318 P-Tier.
  • Emissions without DEF. Its 65 hp turbocharged Yanmar meets Tier 4 Final emissions without diesel exhaust fluid, a maintenance item several larger Deere loaders require. Skid Picker review of the 318 P-Tier.
  • The previous generation's most-cited repair. The prior 318G used the same Yanmar 4TNV86CHT engine family as the current 318 P-Tier; owners of that generation most commonly report a faulty boom hydraulic cylinder as the repair that comes up. Skid Steer Loader Specs, John Deere 318G problems.
  • Against the 320 P-Tier, one size up. The 318 P-Tier costs about $4,000 less than the next size up, the 320 P-Tier, which trades that saving for a higher rated operating capacity (2,190 vs 1,945 lb) and more engine power (69 vs 65 hp). Skid Picker comparison, 320 P-Tier vs 318 P-Tier.
  • The P-Tier line's target buyer. Deere pitches the P-Tier wheeled skid steer line at rental companies, landscapers and contractors who want low owning and operating costs alongside a wide range of compatible attachments. John Deere Canada, 320 P-Tier product page.
  • Why vertical lift, not radial. Deere builds the 318 P-Tier with a vertical-lift boom rather than the radial-lift path used on its smaller 316 P-Tier sibling, which keeps the bucket or attachment closer to the machine through the full lift arc for higher reach and better stability when loading a truck or hopper. John Deere Canada, 318 P-Tier product page.
